pretty cool how Korean beop/법 (law, method) and Thai baep/แบบ (pattern, form, method, design, etc.) both come from Middle Chinese 法 (pjop?) meanwhile the same character is now fǎ in Mandarin... (and hō in Japanese)

Most people interpret Mandarin mǎidān 買單 (bill) as ‘buy-bill’, but it’s actually a phono-semantic match of Canto maai4daan1 埋單 (lit. ‘addition bill’). Maai4 埋 is also not ‘to bury’, but a different verb that is very versatile in Canto: ‘to approach, finish, in addition, etc’
It's 埋單 not 買單

Why is there still no TV show where expert lip-readers and scientists using the latest technology tell us what all those people in old footage are saying? Not just famous historical figures but also just common folk in the background. I need this, I'd watch this all the time. Footage is Parkgate Iron and Steel Co., Rotherham (1901), by Mitchell and Kenyon, of course.

Quanzhou 泉州 used to be known as Citong city 刺桐城 (Coral Tree City). This found an Arabic phono-semantic match in Zaytun زيتون (Olive City), which is the name you can read in Marco Polo (<Çayton> etc.). Zaytun in turn is the origin of the name of 'satin' fabric!

Christian tombstones unearthed in Quanzhou 泉州 inscribed with Phags-pa script. Names of the deceased suggest they were Han Christian converts. The tombstones dated 1311, 1314, 1324 make them contemporary with then Franciscan mission in Zayton (Quanzhou)
