The Lamb Disagrees at VAULT Festival

ALT What do you love about the play? I love the metaphors, the title (The Lamb Disagrees) says a lot already. no more victimisation, sometimes certain things come to us to challenge and help us grow. Do we accept that or do we fight it? Or not take any action? Most of the time, the answer is 'stillness'.

ALT What can audiences expect? A journey, some surprises along the way, some discoveries and some common places where they can find themselves in one of the characters.

ALT Advice for writers who want to write well-rounded characters? Work with actors, let them give feedback and bring more to the character. Sometimes, working on what is not in the script may shed some light, develop the story and make the characters stronger.

ALT What do you love about the play? The strong voice from characters and the different layers of two spaces. You can never tell whether we are living in the reality, or the reality is living within us. The grey area is fascinating, and I love how it shapes Willow's personality.

ALT What can audiences expect? The quirky setting and subtle boundaries between the novel, reality, stage and audience. The power of the construction of the lines and the fun of savouring the effect after each scene. Apart from that, expect the unexpected and have fun in the black box!

ALT Advice for writers who want to write well-rounded characters? Travel, fall in love and get heartbroken.

ALT What inspired you to write the show? The urge to write this play most directly comes from the harassment and assault I've experienced. Those experiences have changed how I interact with this world. I've been fighting against such internalisation since I became aware of it. This play is actually a documentation of my struggle to regain the ownership of the narrative.

ALT What's the most annoying Asian female stereotype in the media? Submissive. It's the core reason why Asian women are objectified in real life. It sets a horrendous example for people and makes them believe we're 'easy targets'.

ALT Advice for writers who want to write well-rounded characters? Think about what you would do in their shoes. Race, gender and social status matter a lot because they make up one's identity, yet they also don't matter that much because our feelings are the same as human beings.

ALT What can audiences expect? A fun story, to begin with. It's a whodunit story with a lead character who broke the fictional world and came to reality. It also discusses the topic of gaze, how we internalise other's expectations and pretend to be who we are not.
