Lagos Primary Health Care Board, SOGON Partner to Tackle Maternal, Newborn Mortality
The Lagos State Primary Health Care Board (LSPHCB) has received a strategic proposal from the Lagos Sector of the Society of Gynaecology and Obstetrics of Nigeria (SOGON) to introduce a new clinical support system aimed at reducing maternal and newborn mortality across the State.
The initiative, known as the Voluntary Obstetricians Scheme, was presented during an advocacy visit by a SOGON Lagos delegation led by its Chairman, Professor Abidoye Gbadegesin.
The scheme seeks to deploy experienced obstetricians and gynaecologists on a voluntary basis to primary healthcare facilities across the State, where they will provide specialist mentorship, support clinical audits, strengthen emergency response and assist healthcare workers in managing obstetric and newborn complications.
Responding to the proposal, the Permanent Secretary, LSPHCB, Dr. Ibrahim Akinwunmi Mustafa, mni, commended SOGON’s commitment and endorsed the establishment of an immediate collaborative framework.
He noted that bringing specialist knowledge directly to primary healthcare facilities would strengthen emergency response and support healthcare workers in managing obstetric complications.
Moving forward, the LSPHCB and SOGON will co-constitute a joint technical committee to finalize operational guidelines, identify initial pilot primary healthcare facilities across diverse IBILE divisions in Lagos, and establish robust referral pathways.
The Lagos State Primary Health Care Board remains committed to strategic partnerships that strengthen primary healthcare services and advance the health and wellbeing of mothers, newborns and communities across Lagos State.

LASG to prioritize Nurses' Training and welfare.
The Lagos State Government (LASG) has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening primary healthcare delivery across the state by prioritizing continuous professional training and enhanced staff welfare for nursing professionals.
Speaking at the 2026 Annual Nurses’ Assembly held at NANNM House, Alausa, Ikeja, under the theme “Our Nurses. Our Future: Empowered Nurses Save Lives,” the Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Primary Health Care Board (LSPHCB), Dr. Ibrahim Akinwunmi Mustafa, mni, announced strategic initiatives designed to elevate the nursing profession. He urged healthcare practitioners to uphold the highest standards of professional ethics, empathy, and integrity.
Dr. Mustafa emphasized that modern nursing has evolved from routine clinical tasks into an evidence-based science requiring continuous skill development. To support this transition, the Lagos State Government will roll more training programs alongside other welfare packages to ease operational challenges for nursing staff.
Addressing the assembly, Dr. Mustafa underscored the critical role nurses play in patient outcomes and urged them to reclaim historical standards of clinical excellence.
"Nursing is no longer just about routine tasks; it is a dynamic, scientific discipline,"said Dr. Mustafa. "Our nurses must embody professionalism in every aspect of service, from clinical competence to professional demeanor.
We must return to foundational values where patients feel supported through compassionate, empathetic, and dignified care."
Dr. Mustafa also reiterated the state’s zero-tolerance stance on ethical misconduct, instructing primary healthcare workers to maintain absolute transparency and eliminate corrupt practices within public facilities.
Welcoming guests and participants, the Director of Nursing Services, Lagos State Primary Health Care Board, Nr. Anne Olusumbo Oyesanya, reflected on the pivotal role nurses play as frontline healthcare providers in local communities.
"At the Primary Health Care level, the nurse is often the first and most consistent point of contact between the health system and the community,"Nr. Oyesanya stated. "With this privilege comes responsibility. The nurse of today cannot remain the nurse of yesterday. Changing health challenges and evolving technologies require nurses who are not only clinically competent, but also confident, innovative, accountable, and ready to lead."
Nr. Oyesanya emphasized that empowerment extends beyond formal training to encompass leadership at all levels of care from antenatal clinics and immunization rooms to bedside and home visits. She reaffirmed the Directorate’s commitment to expanding continuous professional development, fostering mentorship networks, and formally recognizing clinical excellence.
Concluding her address, Nr. Oyesanya urged healthcare professionals to remain steadfastly patient-centered: "People may forget the statistics, but they will remember how we made them feel. Let us be the nurses who bring hope, protect dignity, lead change, and save lives."
The keynote address was delivered by Nr. Cecilia Ogundeko from Trinity University, Yaba, who spoke on the topic “The Empowered Nurse: Leading, Caring, and Saving Lives in a Changing Health System.”
The event also featured an engaging panel discussion focusing on technology, innovation, and modern nursing practice.
Addressing healthcare worker wellness, Nurse Morenikeji Olaniyi-Agboola, a mental health nurse, delivered a specialized talk on mental well-being and stress management strategies tailored for nurses.
The Lagos State Primary Health Care Board continues to execute systematic reforms to upgrade medical facilities, strengthen workforce capacity, and deliver accessible, high-quality primary healthcare across all Local Government Areas in Lagos State.
