🇬🇧 🇷🇴 🌹 Labour and Co-Operative Cambridgeshire County Councillor for St Ives South and Needingworth

Huntingdonshire
Joined January 2017
🌹 In shocking news it is a Labour gain in St Ives South and Needingworth 🌹 I am proud to have done a positive and pragmatic campaign, speaking about my experience and issues councillors can actually affect. I focused on how I can be an active, present and proactive councillor, working with others all year round. A local issue focused and positive campaign can get surprising results (with unpredictable vote splits)! Commiserations to all other candidates - it was a good and hard fought campaign especially by Lib Dems and Conservatives. A big thank you to everyone who supported me in this campaign - with a small team of people leafletting and canvassing, our agent Bob and my partner @Luke_Viner. Thank you all who voted and put their trust in me for this election.

At @UKLabour Party Conference, we hosted a panel with @MAGsaveslives on “Security in a Fragmented World: Rethinking Defence and Development:” In an increasingly uncertain world, security is about more than military strength - it’s about resilience, prevention and tackling instability before crises escalate. Thank you to all our panellists @CalvinBailey, @laurakyrkesmith, @FredThomasUK, @darrencormack and Fiona Crack @bbcworldservice for joining us to discuss the challenges facing Britain’s security.

First vs. last day of #Lab26 conference 🌹 It was nice to catch up with colleagues and friends, listen to speeches and attend quite a few panels especially on migration and international development. A real positive atmosphere this time which has been great to see.

Local Government Reorganisation is not cancelled but it is delayed. Here’s what happened. Splitting Huntingdonshire is not inevitable and Option E is still on the table. Hopefully the Government will make the right decision for our area.

It's the last day of the month so here's a summary of some things that happened in August. September starts tomorrow with an extraordinary HDC meeting on the vote of no confidence... Interesting times ahead.

St Ives Cattle Market - consultation event Wednesday 19 August 4-7pm Corn Exchange - ✋ if we’ll see you there? No decision has been made yet and no planning application submitted. We have to remember those sites are council land and therefore any decision is with the council.

The Stage 2 consultation report is now published - the scheme is at best refined, and with the proposed growth in the area and the Government investment at RAF Wyton, it is clear small changes won't deliver the road capacity needed or a comprehensive public transport package.

We are not calling for a delay - we call for the ambition to match the scale of the issues we face. We're asking the Mayor for a meeting to discuss this in more detail.

Local Government Reorganisation Delayed Cambridgeshire & Peterborough is one of the 2 areas delayed - everywhere else had a decision. I would rather have delay than bad outcome, so this can actually be a good thing if it means getting the right & financially sustainable option

There has been a lot of coverage and speculation on Local Government Reorganisation. Huntingdonshire councillors worked together throughout the last few months and we supported cross-party Option E for a stand-alone Huntingdonshire authority and not splitting district boundaries.

The final decision is with the Minister and has not been made yet - we are expecting the statement from the Minister this week. There was an Urgent Question debate today in Parliament and it was said that the decision will be made soon.

Once we have that decision, I will share my views, but whatever the outcome, I will use my remaining time on both Huntingdonshire District and Cambridgeshire County Council to ensure our area is ready for transitioning to new unitary councils.
