ALT PhD position „High voltage generation in sliding water drops“ Water drops on an insulating and hydrophobic substrate can generate electric potentials of kilovolts upon sliding for just a few centimeters. In this project (funded within the DFG-SPP2176 program), tools to experimentally investigate the charge and voltage generation will be developed, assisted by numerical and electrostatic modeling. The goal is to rationalize the Physics and Chemistry happening at the receding three-phase contact line and identify connections to the surface properties, such as the surface potential and the electrostatic double layer at the drop-substrate interface. I am looking for candidates with a strong physics, chemistry or engineering background, ideally with experience in soft matter physics or interface science.
