Thrilled to share that I’ve been awarded an NIH K99/R00 Pathway to Independence Award from NIDDK! I’m incredibly grateful to my mentor, @LabSaltiel, for his unwavering guidance & support. Excited to continue exploring mitochondrial biology in adipose tissue and metabolic health.

New @Nature research article: dietary cholesterol not only raises LDL—it activates RAS→Ral signaling, driving LDLR internalization and CTSA-mediated lysosomal degradation, independent of PCSK9. Blocking CTSA restores LDLR and cuts circulating LDL in mice. nature.com/articles/s41586-0…

How does caloric restriction reduce energy expenditure while preserving energy storage? doi.org/10.1172/jci.insight.… Alan R. Saltiel @LabSaltiel & team @UCSanDiego show TBK1 acts as a brake on fat burning during fasting—and the combination of a TBK1 inhibitor and an AMPK activator reverses obesity and improves #MetabolicHealth in mice. The figure: Combined TBK1 inhibition and AMPK activation improve metabolic health in obese mice.

With great sadness I report the passing of my scientific mentor Jesse Roth at age 91. Jesse was a brilliant & innovative scientist who led the field of membrane receptor biology from NIH diabetes branch. A small part of that family tree is shown. May his memory be a blessing.
