Early Greek idiom (up to around 600 BC) says the future is ‘behind’ us, as if we’re travelling facing backwards in a carriage, so that we see what’s past clearly before our eyes, but can only glimpse the future if we turn our head round (e.g. through prophecy or dreams). By the fifth century they were more confidently (but less realistically!) talking about looking forward into the future.
