For 34 years, one of Austin’s darkest cases haunted Texas. Two men were convicted. Four were accused. Then DNA pointed investigators toward someone else entirely. Jennifer Harbison, 17, Eliza Thomas, 17, Sarah Harbison, 15, and Amy Ayers, 13, were inside an Austin yogurt shop when something devastating happened after closing. Shortly before midnight, flames were spotted coming from the building. Inside, investigators discovered that all four girls had lost their lives. The case would become known nationwide as the Austin Yogurt Shop case. Years passed without a clear answer. Then, in 1999, authorities accused four young men: Robert Springsteen, Michael Scott, Maurice Pierce and Forrest Welborn. Springsteen and Scott were eventually convicted and received lengthy sentences. Both maintained that their confessions had been coerced. Then the case began falling apart. Their convictions were overturned, DNA recovered during the investigation didn't match the men, and the remaining cases were eventually dismissed. But investigators kept testing the evidence. More than three decades later, advances in forensic technology finally produced a stunning lead. In 2025, Austin police announced that DNA evidence from the case matched Robert Eugene Brashers, a convicted offender investigators had connected to other serious cases across multiple states. There was another major clue. Updated ballistics testing connected a .380 cartridge recovered from the yogurt shop to a 1998 Kentucky case associated with Brashers. And DNA preserved beneath Amy Ayers' fingernails matched Brashers' profile. There would never be an arrest in the Austin case. Brashers had passed away in 1999. But the evidence dramatically changed everything investigators thought they knew. In 2026, a Texas judge formally declared Springsteen, Scott, Pierce and Welborn innocent, clearing the four men who had carried these accusations for decades. Austin later agreed to a $35 million settlement involving the surviving men and Pierce's family. Four young lives were lost. Four other men spent decades connected to something the evidence ultimately showed they didn't do. And after more than three decades, evidence preserved from that night finally led investigators to the name that had been missing all along: Robert Eugene Brashers.
