There's still a lot of confusion about this, especially in the financial planning community. This two-minute video explains it clearly. youtube.com/watch?v=0cphJcNy…

Think you need an unlimited long-term care policy? You don’t. Under state Partnership programs, you only need to insure the assets you want to protect. If care outlasts your policy, Medicaid steps in and your sheltered balance sheet stays 100% intact. 22 Reasons Why LTC Insurance is A LOT Better Today than 25 Years Ago: youtu.be/1684VXCN9hk

They chose to put their money into a house instead of long term care insurance. Your descendants shouldn't benefit from your decision to rely on taxpayers to bail you out any more than they should benefit from you racking up credit card debt instead of paying cash for purchases.

“i will just die in my home i wont go to a nursing home” is an ego preserving way of saying “i will make my eldest daughter juggle unpaid nursing care and being my social world with all her other responsibilities”

This happens more than people realize The caseworker sighed and told him: "Federal law requires state programs to claw back healthcare costs from deceased estates. The house cannot be sold or transferred until the balance is cleared in full." He offered to pay a monthly settlement. They said no. The full $114,000 is due in 60 days, or they foreclose on the property at a public auction
My coworker's mother passed away last November. She left her modest $190,000 house to him clear and free, no mortgage, completely paid off after thirty years of factory work. He moved into the home in January to finally settle the estate. Two weeks ago, a letter arrived from the state Medicaid estate recovery office. Because his mother spent four months in a rehabilitation facility before she passed, the state quietly slapped a retroactive $114,000 lien against the property title. He called the state health department, frantic, asking how a hospital stay could bankrupt an inherited home that had no mortgage balance. The caseworker sighed and told him: "Federal law requires state programs to claw back healthcare costs from deceased estates. The house cannot be sold or transferred until the balance is cleared in full." He offered to pay a monthly settlement. They said no. The full $114,000 is due in 60 days, or they foreclose on the property at a public auction. A lifetime of working-class savings, wiped out overnight by a retroactive healthcare lien. You don't own generational wealth. You're just holding a property title until the state finds a legal mechanism to repossess it the moment you die.

Averages are meaningless when you're the one hit by lightning. Planning for care using personal savings forces you to hoard cash for a worst-case scenario, creating a massive drag on your retirement. You are betting your financial independence on an equation where you cannot answer the two most basic questions: when will you need care, and for how long will you need it? Long term care insurance isn't for everyone. In fact, many retirees may be better off not purchasing a policy if they could qualify for Medicaid funded long term care without significant financial hardship. The key isn't whether long term care insurance is good or bad. The key is whether it's the right fit for your financial situation, goals, and care preferences. That's why personalized planning matters. Decades ago, if you exhausted your LTCi benefits, Medicaid forced you to spend down to $2,000 before helping. Today’s Partnership policies solved this. If your policy pays $500,000 in care, you legally protect $500,000 in countable savings; for you, your spouse, and your heirs. 22 Reasons Why LTC Insurance is A LOT Better Today than 25 Years Ago: youtu.be/1684VXCN9hk

Morning Star Article Breakdown: "The Simplest Way to Plan for Long-Term Care Expenses" by Christine Benz. While having a plan is a great start, earmarking a giant pile of your own cash as a long-term care "bucket" oversimplifies the risk. Earmarking your own cash is not insuring—it's retaining 100% of the risk. Think about the math. If you lock up $200,000 or $300,000 of your hard-earned wealth in a dedicated bucket, that money is sidelined. It's out of your lifestyle spending. Earmarking your own money doesn't give you peace of mind. It traps your capital. 90% of what you read online about long-term care insurance is either: Recycled horror stories from the 1990s or Misinformation pushed by agents selling overpriced cash-value life insurance. Long-term care insurance has evolved radically. The internet’s narrative hasn’t. 22 Reasons Why LTC Insurance is A LOT Better Today than 25 Years Ago: youtu.be/1684VXCN9hk

That’s wonderful. 💜 My mom had a massive stroke just after her 88th birthday & has been in a care facility since being released from hospital. Grateful she had LTC insurance, so paying for her care isn’t a worry but life changed profoundly that day.

Airbags became federally mandated in cars on Sept 1, 1998. The government didn't retrofit old beaters. They built modern cars to a safer standard. Long-term care insurance did the exact same thing. Stop judging modern, regulated policies by 1990s clunkers. 22 Reasons Why LTC Insurance is A LOT Better Today than 25 Years Ago: youtu.be/1684VXCN9hk

Most people don't realize a chronic illness rider is NOT true long-term care insurance. If your advisor sold you one of these, check the fine print—it usually says it right on the page. On top of that, if the benefits don't grow over time, inflation will eat away at your coverage before you ever get to use it. Always ask these critical questions before buying: What type of policy is this? Are you trained to sell true LTC insurance? Does the benefit pool grow over time? Scams don’t pay out $200 billion to 1.5 million families. Scams aren't approved by 51 departments of insurance. Scams dont get subsidized by federal tax deductions. Long-term care insurance is NOT broken. People just mistake complex risk management for a product they hope they never use.

You can pay your policy on time for 26 years and still lose everything. Charles and Ida bought a hybrid policy thinking they were covered. But the fine print showed it was only guaranteed until age 83. By age 84—right when long-term care risk is highest—a policy like this can completely lapse. That means over $100,000 paid in, completely gone. Always check what age your policy is actually guaranteed to stay in force. Need us to double-check your policy? Compounding grows the balance sheet. Leverage defends it. Long-term care insurance does both: immediate leverage on day one, compounding benefit pools every year after.
