Your periodic reminder that less ice at the Arctic is consistent with a weaker jet stream that allows cold air to drift down into the Great Plains. The frigid temps you're experiencing happen BECAUSE of a warming planet, not in spite of it.

With yet another deadly mass shooting in America, it’s worth re-watching Jon Stewart completely dismantle a Republican MAGA extremist on the issue.

this is the conclusion of "Laudate Deum" (a kind of "Laudato si'" part two), by Pope Francis, published today. Objectively, the collision course between this pontificate and the United States continues.

Comparison of Life Expectancy and Healthcare Spending Per Capita (1970-2018) When examining life expectancy in relation to healthcare spending per capita across various countries from 1970 to 2018, it becomes evident that the United States stands out as an outlier. The U.S. healthcare system has garnered a reputation for its unique challenges. While it boasts top-tier medical professionals, cutting-edge technology, and expertise, accessing healthcare services can often come at an exorbitant cost, particularly for those without insurance. Even those with insurance through their employment must grapple with high deductibles and astronomical hospital bills that seem designed to extract as much as possible from patients. For instance, I once had a friend who, after suffering multiple fractures, declined an ambulance ride, opting to research which hospital was in-network before accepting an Uber ride. In my own experience, after being bitten by a stray dog, I needed a series of four painful rabies shots, resulting in a nearly $30,000 bill. It took over a year of persistent negotiations with my insurance company to have the cost reduced. To this day, I feel anxiety whenever I see a bill or a notice marked "immediate attention" in my mailbox. In contrast, during my time living in South Korea, I paid less than $20 for a full day's hospital stay, IV therapy treatment, and a comprehensive examination by an English-speaking doctor for a stomach virus. Another friend of mine, needing anti-seizure medication, discovered that a month's supply in the U.S. would have cost her nearly $1,000, whereas in South Korea, a year's worth of the same medication amounted to just $50. Here are ten examples of extraordinarily inflated costs one might encounter in a U.S. hospital bill: 1. Tylenol: $15 per individual pill 2. Patient belonging bag (often a grocery bag): $8 per bag 3. Box of tissues: $8 per box 4. Physician's gloves: $53 per non-sterile pair 5. Plastic cup for medications: $10 per cup 6. Surgical marking pen: $17.50 per pen 7. Blood pressure cuff: $20 per use 8. Oral administration fee: $6.25 per instance 9. Use of headlight in the operating room: $93.50 10. Swabs and alcohol for skin disinfection: $23 per swab
