#OnThisDay 123 years ago the LSWR opened a relative latecomer, the branch from Axminster to Lyme Regis. It faced challenging topography with a gradient of 1 in 40 and the graceful and innovative concrete Cannington Viaduct to cross the River Lim. Jules buff.ly/MrgY2NP

#OnThisDay 187 years ago the London & Southampton Railway reached Southampton, of sorts. Southampton (temporary) to Winchester and Basingstoke to Winchfield opened, but Winchester to Basingstoke was a road coach until 11th May 1840, when this permanent Southampton terminus opened

Lovely LSWR crest on the facade, a VR postbox and an old red phone box, all adding to the character. And a set of Pooley scales on display in the Booking Office.

Great to visit the Grade II Listed Wareham Station in Dorset with @SW_Help with a view to help restore some original Victorian features for a new retail opportunity. It’s a beautiful building, but does need a new tenant, so interested parties should contact Amey.

Fun fact! Waterloo station once had a track running through the concourse (past where WH Smith is now) to Waterloo East. There was a drawbridge for level access for passengers & staff
Waterloo station opened #OTD 11th July 1878. So I’ve unlocked doors, explored hidden vaults & found heritage features to show you 10 secrets of @LondonWaterloo:

Today I explored the rooftop of @LondonWaterloo: the views are superb! Had a good view of scaffolding & cradle, which enable replacement of 12,000m2 concourse roof panels with polycarbonate: it’s a huge project, with a couple more years to go. Thanks to @NetworkRailSE for access

A big well done to @SW_Help for all their dedicated hard work (and their contractors) in restoring the canopy at #RichmondStation to its former art deco glory. It was a pleasure to be part of the journey and we next look forward to the booking hall transformation. @BOLarchitect
