Just got word that Christopher Tape, the new St. Tammany parish coroner plans to shut down the sexual assault nurse examiner program and instead make the area hospitals do the exams. I cannot put into words how harmful this is to sexual assault survivors! #LaLege – at Baton Rouge, LA

Good News: Three major gas suppliers — @airgas @airproducts and @MathesonGas — have now prohibited the use of their nitrogen for death penalty executions. If lawmakers won’t do the right thing, we will make their murderous plans impossible. news.yahoo.com/three-top-nit…

People who run domestic violence shelters across the state said they will have to pull back on an expansion they have been implementing if they don't continue to see an increase in funding. #lalege #lagov
.@RepMcFarland says the extra $7m domestic violence shelters received last year was supposed to be one-time money only. Advocates for DV victims said they were told the $$ might continue in the Department of Children and Family Services budget. #lalege lailluminator.com/2024/02/25…

There’s an all out attack on workers happening this legislative session. Anti-union bills, going after workers comp, and cutting unemployment. Unions improve working conditions. Workers comp actually works in this state. UI ensures people take good jobs.
Rep. Raymond Crews (R) has filed a pair of bills that would make unionizing illegal for Louisiana public employees. #lalege #lagov legis.la.gov/legis/BillInfo.… legis.la.gov/legis/BillInfo.…

Pretty sure the public comment period in a state legislative committee meeting discussing a bill reinstating the death penalty is exactly when they are supposed to provide testimony.
Sen. @KleinpeterCaleb scolds anti-death penalty activists for their testimony, points out they are sitting in front of victims’ families. “There's another place and time that you can come do this. Not today.” #lalege #lagov

I asked @pewresearch to confirm Rep. Villio's allegation that Pew refused to come back and review Louisiana's 2017 bipartisan justice laws. This is their response #lalege #lagov
The House is now debating HB10, Villio’s bill to eliminate good time for most prisoners. Villio says Louisiana Sheriffs asked @pewresearch, which helped craft the state’s 2017 justice reforms, to come back and review their impact. She says Pew denied that request #lalege #lagov

"Domestic violence is one of the largest public safety issues facing Louisiana. In 2020, the state had the fifth highest female homicide rate in the country. More than half of women victims that year were killed by an intimate partner." Important reporting by @JSODonoghue

Members of our coalition have been going to the LA capitol for years. Decades even. The principled leadership, and fair-minded diligence of @MattWillard97 this session has been special. LA is lucky to have a leader like him. #lalege @LSReform @ACLUofLouisiana
Rep. @MattWillard97 points out that a recent execution by nitrogen hypoxia lasted 20 minutes while questioning the author of HB 6, which adds nitrogen hypoxia as a legal form of execution. #LaLege #LaGov

If you look at the list of folks who got money from JRI, you are going to see sheriffs, DAs and crime labs on that list. The sheriff's association even received money directly to invest in technology. The idea that they didn't financially benefit from JRI is not true. #lalege

Today the @LouisianaHouse will take up a bill that forces state employees to suffocate and electrocute other human beings to death, and allows for secret state contracts at DOC (even though we don’t allow for that under any other circumstance). #lalege #lagov @helenprejean – at Baton Rouge, LA
Louisiana has the highest rate of getting it wrong in America. We spend more than $10,000,000 in total costs to carry out a single execution. And, the death penalty is NOT a deterrent to crime. It’s clear that more executions hurt our business climate, too…#lalege #lagov

It's not uncommon for women sentenced to life without parole to be in prison for killing their abuser. Our understanding of domestic violence has changed since the 1990s/1980s. Women whose cases might be viewed differently today are still incarcerated. #lalege
Testifying in House criminal justice today is Ms. Beatrice Taylor, whose case I wrote about at length last year. She spent 23 years in prison for killing her abuser. He broke her foot the night she stabbed him. She was convicted of murder. #lalege lailluminator.com/2023/05/06…

Probably a good indicator of the way things are going at the Louisiana legislature is that an execution method described as torture by eyewitnesses passed unanimously and the only amendment was to *provide counseling services for the executioner*

It's unnecessary for all this legislation to get an initial vetting and votes in one day. A skeptical person might think that's being done deliberately so legislators don't have much time to think about each bill...and to stretch the advocates who are opposed rather thin. #lalege
The measures getting initial votes today include those that would expand gun rights, police immunity from prosecution, restructure public defense, make it easier to perform executions, eliminate parole for most people...and many others. All voted on today. #lalege
