ALT Slide from a keynote speech by Professor Sander van der Linden at the Health Information UNPACKED event: "What is 'fake news'? (van der Linden et al., 2023) Our definition, therefore, focuses on the extent to which a headline or claim shows evidence of manipulation, regardless of the article's source, its intent, or whether it has been fact-checked. We define misinformation in the broadest possible sense as any information that is demonstrably false or otherwise misleading, regardless of its source or intention. Verification may be determined by fact-checking, benchmarking against expert or scientific consensus, or identifying known characteristics of deceptive or epistemologically dubious content (e.g., lack of context, logical fallacies, manipulation, opinions presented as facts)."

ALT A slide from Petra Gronholm - Assistant Professor at LSHTM (researching mental health and health stigma) titled "What gives rise to misinformation. The slide includes examples of headlines and social media images which are typical of what consumers of social media are likely to see around themes of mental health. The examples include a headline stating "30 movies that inaccurately portray mental health conditions" with images from films such as "The Joker" and "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind". Another headline reads "1,200 killed by mental patients". A post states "My friend is feeling sad again today. It's not "depression" or "bipolar" - those aren't real STOP WHINING 🤪". The final image is titled "Mental Health sounds like..." with speech bubbles coming out of a cartoon character stating "other people have it a lot worse", "medicine is unnecessary", "stop being dramatic" and so on.
