Applications are now open for the Nuclear Security Fellows Program at @MIT. We are looking for the next generation of thought leaders in nuclear security by supporting research that will advance policy-relevant understanding of the subject. Fellowships are available for pre-doctoral and post-doctoral scholars and for junior faculty. Applications are accepted through December 6, 2024 and decisions will be announced in January 2025.

Congrats! Very well deserved!
I'm incredibly honored to receive the 2025 @APSphysics Joseph A. Burton Forum Award! The Award recognizes “outstanding contributions to the public understanding or resolution of issues involving the interface of physics and society.” @PrincetonSPIA aps.org/funding-recognition/…

Russia is developing nuclear-armed satellites to destroy other satellites.
When this news broke, it struck me as not good. The more I think about it, the worse it becomes.

It’s disturbing to see gatekeeping around who can engage in existentially important issues. We need humility and a willingness to learn from one another to improve. Promote dialogue over dismissal-growth comes from understanding different perspectives, even when we disagree.

Israeli retaliation against Iranian nuclear facilities would likely prompt Iran to threaten and potentially invoke Article X to withdraw from the NPT, regardless of whether Iran decides to pursue weaponization or not.

🚨 New piece out in the @IntlStudiesRev!
I discuss the different barriers that junior international scholars face to participate in knowledge production. This includes epistemological biases and barriers, citizenship/visa issues, & financial obstacles.

Earlier this month, Commerce released an Interim Final Ruling for new tech export controls. This IFR informs how the US intends to govern quantum technology commerce, embracing plurilateralism and flexibility to afford intl. collaboration. My thoughts: gotechinsights.com/blog/bala…
New (interim) export controls, largely focused on quantum, announced yesterday. See more:

Nuclear weapons alone cannot solve the political issues of deterrence and assurance. How is the US-ROK alliance’s (over)reliance on nuclear weapons impacting the US’ various aims on the Korean Peninsula? Read my latest in @38NorthNK @carnegienpp👇🏽

Should AI be included in nuclear policy talks?
Overly broad discussions of AI might worsen existing tensions within the nuclear policy community & hinder efforts at nuclear risk. Productive dialogue on AI should be focused, cautious, & technically informed, argues @LRand11 👇

One of the few things that NPT diplomats agree on right now is the importance of discussing AI in high-level nonproliferation and nuclear risk-reduction dialogues.
But is this actually a good idea?
Here's @LRand11's trenchant take.

AI came up a lot at the NPT prep comm. While I think the AI-nuclear convergence merits attention, we need to be cautious of what forums, people, and topics shape the dialogue. Otherwise we risk increasing hype and reducing much-needed consensus. My take: carnegieendowment.org/posts/…
So happy to see @carnegienpp holding the New Voices, New Ideas Conference again this year. Thanks to @kyl_elise and the rest of the NPP team for making space to bring new voices and new ideas into the nuclear policy community
This was a fantastic report. Highly recommend if anyone wants to get geared up amidst the Sentinel furor
Replying to @mattkorda
As I wrote in my report on Sentinel, if you project costs out to a different year (i.e. 2050 or 2100), then you likely get a different result (life-extending MMIII being cheaper than pursuing Sentinel ASAP). Yet they keep sticking with 2070/2075 instead.
