The EP's Internal Market Committee has just adopted a report on the draft directive on transparency of third country interest representation. The directive is intended to counter foreign interference by introducing national transparency registers for foreign lobbying. 🧵1/
✅ IMCO also backs @AdinaValean ’s report to boost transparency of foreign lobbying! Press release available shortly

Overall, I think this is quite a balanced compromise. It tackles the most difficult areas of the draft well. However, the fact that transparency registers are unlikely to be effective in addressing foreign interference overall remains. 5/

Let’s see how the draft progresses in the Council and what the Democracy Shield – to be announced in November – can add to defend European democracy. The draft report will be discussed and voted on in the 24-27 November EP plenary session.

The US government is once again ramping up its rhetoric on the EU’s Digital Services Act. It is now reportedly considering imposing sanctions on Commission staff responsible for implementing the DSA. This would be an unprecedented move. 🧵⬇️ reuters.com/world/us/trump-a…

'The DSA is censorship' is the narrative the US gov. is using as a justification, a claim that has little to no basis in reality. The DSA only provides a framework on how platforms have to deal with e.g. illegal content. What is illegal is defined in national or other EU laws. 5/

This is not a matter of different understandings of 'free speech' in the EU and US, as is sometimes suggested in the media. Rather than acting out of genuine concern over fundamental rights, the US gov. is pushing a narrative that suits its political and geoeconomic interests 6/6
