Indeed, I'm still looking for PhD and MPhil research students interested in the theory and practice of programming language design & implementation! I'm in particular looking for one to work on Haskell/FP optimization and one to work on a compiler for quantum physics experiments
Doing heavy proof work with LLMs is virtually indistinguishable from AI psychosis except for the fact that you get a Lean artifact at the end.
The #GPCE26 paper submission deadline has been extended to March 12, 2026!
CfP: 2026.ecoop.org/home/gpce-202…
Like last year, GPCE will be co-located with ECOOP (in Brussels, Belgium) rather than SPLASH.
Please help to spread the news!

AI agents seem great at replacing teams of programmers that churn out buggy messes nobody wants to maintain. Mediocre companies are set to save a lot of money!

Congratulations @odersky for receiving the SIGPLAN Programming Languages Achievement Award!
Your work is a great inspiration for me :)
Well deserved!
Do you agree that OOPSLA and ICFP are top-tier PL venues?

Currently, one can't even perma-link the full PL ranking (including OOPSLA and ICFP), and this is "a feature, not a bug: only top tier venues are included in permalinks"

Category theory is what you get when you start from normal mathematical facts and keep asking "why?" until the answers become meaningless.
If looking for a faculty position and not afraid to move, you should really consider this! The department is super friendly and the research conditions are almost unbeatable. By the way, in Hong Kong the internet is free and English is an official language.
We are recruiting! Applications including 1) a cover letter, 2) a full curriculum vitae, 3) names and contact information of at least three referees, 4) a research statement, and 5) a teaching statement should be submitted via facrecruit.hkust.edu.hk/.
Today I talked at the IWACO workshop about my ideas on Modular Borrowing Without Ownership or Linear Types. You can check out the slides and recording on the website!

When Rust programmers tell you to just use an arena and indices instead of pointers and dynamic memory to encode your data structures, they're essentially asking you to write a small virtual machine to work around the limitations of their programming language.
Honored and grateful that our paper was distinguished at ICFP 2024!
It's about using "type inference and elaboration", a new compiler optimization technique, to automatically remove intermediate data structures from functional programs.

Yijia Chen presents his great work with @LParreaux on using type-based flow analysis to implement deforestation.
Last week, we were delighted to receive the visit of Dr. Vladimir Rubanov and Anton Soldatov from Huawei R&D. We held an improvised mini-workshop focusing on our many common research interests. Looking forward to future collaborations and exchanges!
