Looking at the UK jobs numbers this morning is a concern. I began my career at DWP 23 years ago and I like to think the quality of the advice at that time would conclude that labour market flexibility, work incentives & activation are all impaired by the combined burden of higher employer NICs, 2x inflation increases to the National Living Wage, and an employee rights bill is far too much to absorb in one go - even before you get to the (potential) structural headwinds of AI right now. Madness to be pressing on with the rights Bill and above inflation increases to the NLW at a time when the labour market is cooling rapidly. Amidst the macroeconomic debate on optimal fiscal and monetary policy, this microeconomic fail is given insufficient attention.

👇I have heard this in almost every investor meeting for three years amongst those who want to inject capital into the UK economy. There is no “primary mission of growth” whilst energy policy is widely seen as dysfunctional.
In my first meeting with Prime Minister Starmer, we discussed how the United Kingdom could attract more foreign direct investment from the United States. My response was simple: lower your energy costs. Read my op-ed in the @Telegraph about how the UK can secure affordable, reliable energy from its own resources: telegraph.co.uk/news/2025/10…

A tremendous amount of hard work by the whole @UKHofficial team to deliver a comprehensive campaign from November Budget to Spring Statement - promoting the role hospitality can play, with support, in delivering solutions
Yesterday's Spring Statement was a missed opportunity for the Chancellor to provide the vital backing hospitality needs ahead of the April cliff edge. We’ve been one of the leading voices in the media since the Statement, making sure hospitality’s voice is heard loud and clear.

The UK could lose up to 9000 pubs. From April, pubs with a rateable value of £100,000, will see business rates jump by £19,000 per year. They will need to sell an additional: 60,000 pints a year. Thats 1200 pints a week. Thats 170 extra pints a day. Thats before rising energy bills, wages and other costs.

UK economy ‘on course to skirt a recession’ - whilst this is far from guaranteed given tight margins involved for Dec GDP, the upbeat composite PMI - added to credit/debit card spend data, & tax receipts for Dec - paint rosier picture than retail sales did thetimes.co.uk/article/00433…

One of our three key aims for the #AutumnStatement is to grow the hospitality sector. Gov't proposals to reform planning for businesses must be implemented rapidly. Our sector previously invested billions in communities, and we want to return to, and exceed, those levels.
