If we focus only on “finds the right answer” we are missing what it means to be mathematically fluent! Loving @rob-baier.Baku.social and Albert Vilalta making fluency fun! #NCTMNCTE2025 #NCTENCTM2025 #MTBoS

"By concentrating on what, and leaving out why, mathematics is reduced to an empty shell … If you deny learners the opportunity to … pose their own problems, make their own conjectures and discoveries, to be wrong, to be creatively frustrated, to have an inspiration, and to cobble together their own explanations and proofs – you deny them mathematics itself ( Lockhart 2009)."

Spice up "dry" math topics with "Would you rather?" questions.
Unit conversions was my most boring lesson until I changed the questions to things like "Would you rather drive 100 ft/sec or 50 mph?" Students would make predictions and want to learn the math to find the answer.

"It is our responsibility to ensure that students see the relevance and usefulness of mathematics, and a steady stream of tricks won’t help convince them of this."
This month, NCTM President @kdykema addresses the use of tricks in the classroom: nctm.link/PKnw3

For Tier 1 to be what it should be, we must not lower the bar.
Our job in Tier 1 is to set the bar, make learners aware of the bar & what it takes to reach it, & then lift ALL learners to the bar.
Lowering anything amounts to nothing.
We raise the learners up instead.

Another Math Focus Training in the books! This time, I was accompanied by the amazing @KristinW0701, who co-presented with me. So proud of you! We had amazing conversations with our Panther Mathematicians! #PISDMathChat @PearlHallES

PSA: You can’t intervene your way out of a Tier 1 problem. Explicit, systematically planned Tier 1 and 2 instruction is essential in order for Tier 3 to be fully effective.
Always reflect on Tier 1 and 2 first. #multiplyexcellence

📐🧮🤓#PISDMathChat is going Back to the Basics (B2B)! Problem Solving in action!
We had a hard time comprehending the 3 reads so we decided to focus on one thing at a time. I love this strategy when reading word problems because it helps the kids find their own meaning to the problem/helps with accountability. I am learning so much! @PISDESMath #FisherTigers
