The second is a fuel surcharge on freight. That surcharge does not wait for a budget. Carriers send it in 30 to 60 days. Then it is built into the landed cost of milk, bread, lumber, and whatever else came on a trailer.
You will not see “diesel” on the grocery tape.
You will see a higher cost!
People who track food prices are already talking about another half point of grocery inflation if this holds. That does not sound like much until it sits on top of years of the same climb. Winter heating oil rides the same market. The farm that is cutting corn this week is burning the same fuel you just paid $2.67 for.
Two wars pulled finished diesel off the world market.
One of our biggest refineries is down for maintenance.
Refiners are sitting on a fat crack spread while the rest of us wait for the next sticker.
Inflation is not a chart on a minister’s slide.
It is the quiet markup between the terminal and the shelf.
