"I am not afraid. I was born for this." (Joan of Arc) We were born for these times, we're right where we need to be.

From the "Gospel of Truth" (Nag Hammadi text): When [a person] comes to knowledge, his ignorance vanishes of itself, as the darkness vanishes when light appears, so also the deficiency vanishes in the perfection. These Gnostics believed knowledge was salvation. #spirituality

From the same text: You are the perfect day, and in you dwells the light that does not fail. Lovely. #spirituality #gnosticism #ancientrome #history
Gnosticism in Ancient Rome wasn't a single set of beliefs. Like Christianity, there were many versions, or sub-sets. One group of Gnostics believed the Old Testament God was petty and cruel, while the New Testament had an entirely different God--one who was loving and merciful.
Some of the Nag Hammadi texts claim the world was not created by a loving deity, but by a cosmic cluster-effing a-hole with a god complex. Like God's F-up younger brother. (Bob Almighty?) Maybe that's why we're in this mess...

How to forgive yourself: pretend you're forgiving a small child you love. (For me, my nephew. There's nothing he could do I wouldn't forgive.) Now extend that to yourself. (No nephew? Think of a best friend.) #forgiveness #mindfulness #Spirituality
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well. ~ Julian of Norwich #spirituality #peace #mystic #DontWorry
From today's @dailystoic : You can enjoy the sunshine today, while still bringing in your furniture just in case. Being prepared doesn't mean living in anxiety, or not enjoying the moment.
St Paul: Christians should REJOICE with those who rejoice, and WEEP with those who weep! Stoics: omg what r u, running a circus?
St Paul: Love your neighbor as yourself. Stoics: F yeah. St Paul: As long as he’s xtian like you. Stoics: What no
St Paul + Epictetus use almost the exact same words when they say “Be at peace with all people.” But Paul adds a caveat, “Be at peace with all...if its not too hard.” Epictetus is just like, “Be at peace with all, I don’t wanna hear excuses.”

And Epictetus used to be a slave, so don’t go to him with your sob stories of why you can’t be at peace with all people. Adopt a "no excuses for your own bullshit" policy.
Paul + the Stoics: Earthly authorities, like the Emperor, are appointed by God. Obeying them, you’re obeying God.
There was this idea in ancient thought of the world’s civic organization as mirroring the organization of heaven. God = Emperor, etc. This was present in both pagan and Xtian thought (at least, some xtian thought).
Xtian God: Vengeance is mine! I will repay! Roman Stoics: ……how bout we chill about the vengeance thing, yeah?
Stoics: Love your enemies! Don't seek vengeance! St Paul: Bless those who persecute you! B/c God will get vengeance for you! Stoics:…not what we meant Christ: Me neither
Seneca: “The 1st thing philosophy undertakes is to give a fellow-feeling with all men.” (Not sure yet if this included slaves. There is another essay on slavery, early xtianity, stoicism. Will get to that soon. This one's still about Paul & stoicism.)
Seneca on love for your fellow man: The whole point of philosophy is to lead people to unity and mutual love. (Surprise suprise, its not about feeling intellectually superior. Although it can do that too.)
