boomer path: - skied his way through school in Vermont - was a bellhop w a $90/month Greenwich Village apt when he learned he would need to enroll in grad school to dodge the draft, so he stumbled into b-school @ Stern - took his MBA to Aspen to wash dishes, falling in with a 'class' of service people who hop from one resort town to another, avoiding real jobs like the plague - tried an advertising job but hated it/quit to hitchhike across the Saraha w his gf - bummed around Europe, burning through savings - met someone who showed him how to make money selling clothes from india, moved to india and started a business doing exactly that - that did well but then failed and he got a job as cofounder of MTV, later became CEO of Viacom Learned all this while listening to Rick Rubin's interview w Tom Freston. Kinda reminds me of my dad's (much less dramatic) path going back to the 60s. Even Steve Jobs kinda dicked around for years like this. Insane how different things are today. From childhood you're jammed into activities, a good college is so hard to get into and so expensive, the second you get out you're scrambling to cover student loan payments, and if you have a gap on your resume then it looks weird and they'll hire one of the other 50 candidates who check off the right boxes. And everyone is hyper-specialized.
