for the first time ever, Anthropic opened the doors and showed how fast AI is actually building itself and it's a lot: AI already runs 26% of the work that builds their next models, up from under 1% in February and could hit 80% by the end of the year. around 30,000 AI agents are working inside the company at any given moment. their monitor flags around 100,000 agent transcripts a week, and only about 50 ever reach a human. only 6% of their compute goes to safety, the rest goes to making the models more powerful. and they admit it themselves, "the world can't see what's going on inside AI labs." we're not heading toward AI building AI, we're already living in it.
AI systems are getting more powerful, and they're increasingly being used to build the next version of themselves. We want to illuminate that progress for the public. Today, we're sharing three measurements that help track AI development: 1. How much AI R&D is done by AI. 2. How well AI agents are overseen. 3. How compute is allocated. We provide a snapshot of these metrics from inside Anthropic. Any frontier developer could publish the same measures, and third parties could verify them. As the world considers pacing the frontier, we should do everything possible to minimize the gap between what frontier labs know and what the public knows. This means better measuring the development of AI, publishing our findings, and giving society an opportunity to decide how to use this information.

Was dort niemand kann: Geld vermehren.

Ok this is starting to feel like a f*cking disaster. The CEO of Anthropic just published an article admitting AI is already building the next generation of AI by itself. He says within 6 to 12 months a rogue swarm could take over the entire internet and cause hundreds of billions of dollars in damage. And what makes it scarier, Elon Musk just backed up everything Dario said. All of this dropping just days after Jacob Coxon went viral with his warning about AI and the extinction of humanity. Tell me this timing isn't strange.
We Must Pace the Frontier: I’ve written a new essay on why the AI industry should slow down, with a three-part plan for doing so. Anthropic is unilaterally committing to the first of these steps. We’ll provide third-party evaluators with permanent, employee-level access to our systems, so that they can verify adherence to our safety measures, report on incidents, and assess models’ alignment during training. [Writing this in a personal capacity, not on behalf of my employer (Anthropic).] Jacob’s thread is very worth reading. Here’s my birds-eye view of the situation with risks from AI: 1. AI developers believe their technology could cause human extinction (or similarly bad outcomes). This could happen in the next few years. In general, the more senior the employee, the more concerned they are. 2. Why do AI developers continue despite the risk? Due to a mixture of commercial incentives and a belief that they are in a race with other, less responsible AI developers that will abuse the technology or develop it less safely. 3. Unlike traditional software, we can’t “program” AIs to behave how we’d like. AIs frequently severely misbehave. For instance, AIs from multiple developers recently hacked their way out of secure evaluation environments and into real-world companies, even though no one asked them to do this. 4. We have methods that can nudge AIs towards better behavior, but nothing that can robustly align them. Insofar as there is a plan, it’s to make sure that AIs are good enough at alignment training that they can align their successors better than we can align current AIs. 5. Many AI developer staff desperately want to slow down to figure out how to build AI more safely. That was the intent of this open letter (which I signed): pacingthefrontier.com/ I work on safety research at Anthropic because I hope my work will reduce the chance of these extinction-level bad outcomes.
I resigned from Anthropic today. I spent the last three years doing pretraining research at both OpenAI and Anthropic. Neither company is acting responsibly. They are racing straight to self-improving superintelligence and gambling with our lives. More thoughts below.
