Road salts run off into our streams when ice & snow melts after a storm, turning our freshwater salty. These salts are harmful to wildlife like fish, birds, salamanders, & frogs. Protect wildlife this winter (while also staying safe) by using less road salt & sweeping up excess.

In 2014, we "inoculated" logs with shiitake and oyster mushroom cultures to use as a teaching tool. For 5 years, we seemed to have a wood ear for mushroom growing: very few emerged. But this fall, they were full of shiitake mushrooms! Morel of the story: success maitake a while.
