The answer why is racism. It is not failing Eddie, but also Chimney and Hen. The show producer is white, the writers are almost all white and the cast that gets all the storylines is always white. They are all mutually responsible.

It would be interesting if they explored this idea of Eddie denying himself things he doesn't deserve and whether that stems from his childhood... The idea of Helena and Ramon weaponising things like juice, or small things that made Eddie happy, would add a new layer to him.
