Two years later, Americans are once again celebrating the power of the ballot box. But what exactly is the “promise of America” to the millions who have lived under its bombs, sanctions and military interventions? Palestinians have watched Republicans and Democrats exchange power while American weapons continued to arrive, American vetoes continued to protect Israel, and Palestinian lives remained expendable. The question was never whether Americans could change their government. It was whether changing their government could ever change what that government does to the rest of the world. Democracy cannot be measured only by the freedom of those who vote, while ignoring the lives of those who have no vote over the power that destroys them.
