Now that @AbdulElSayed has been asked to disavow the Muslim Brotherhood because of his mother’s alleged ties to the Muslim Brotherhood before he was born, will we be asking Donald Trump to disavow the Ku Klux Klan because of his father’s alleged ties to the KKK in the 1920s?

A huge factor in the collapse of our collective mental health is that people have stopped reading. Reading lessens loneliness, builds community, sharpens the mind. It brings joy. There is a darkness gathering over the world and voracious reading is how you fight it.

Universities should really give alumni lifetime access to the library. We paid enough for tuition, the least you can do is let us keep reading.

Sergeant tries to steamroll this Uber driver that also happens to be a lawyer. Gets caught in lies.
When an on-duty police sergeant looks you in the face and fabricates a fake statute just to force your camera off, that isn’t law enforcement, it is pure abuse of power and intimidation.
We are in Wilmington, North Carolina, Jesse Bright was working a side hustle driving for Uber to pay down his student loans. He picked up a passenger for what seemed like a routine ride to pick up a paycheck.
Unbeknownst to Bright, the destination was an address under surveillance by local law enforcement. Moments after driving away, his car was surrounded by five officers from the Wilmington Police Department and New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office.
Recognizing the dangerous escalation of being swarmed, Bright did exactly what any citizen should do to protect themselves: he took out his phone and hit record.
Instead of conducting a professional investigation, Wilmington Police Sergeant Kenneth Becker immediately resorted to blatant bully tactics.
Becker marched up to the window and demanded Bright stop filming. When Bright stood firm on his First Amendment rights, Becker went full corrupt, inventing a fictional legal standard on the spot, telling him a "new law" had just passed outlawing filming the police, and explicitly barking: "Turn it off or I'll take you to jail."
When intimidation failed, the retribution kicked in. Bright calmly told the officers he wasn't just an Uber driver, he was an active criminal defense attorney who practiced right down the street at the local courthouse, knew the statutes inside and out, and offered to show his bar card.
Sgt. Becker mocked him ("And an Uber driver?") and immediately retaliated by calling in a K-9 drug-sniffing unit to tear into Bright's vehicle after Bright explicitly refused consent to a warrantless search.
They detained an innocent man just trying to earn an honest living, threatened him with unlawful arrest, lied directly about the law, and subjected him to a retaliatory vehicle search purely because his camera was rolling and bruised their egos. BTW the K-9 search came back completely clean and found nothing, they were forced to release him without another word.
After the event occurred, Bright uploaded the raw footage online and exposed the corruption to the public.
Wilmington Police Chief Ralph Evangelous had to issue a public condemnation, explicitly stating that recording police in public is a protected constitutional right and welcoming citizens to film.
Internal Affairs launched a full investigation, resulting in Sgt. Kenneth Becker being stripped of his rank, demoted back down to a patrol officer, and slapped with a permanent pay cut.
The department was forced to issue mandatory policy retraining to every single officer on the force regarding citizens' First Amendment right to film.
Know your rights, never consent to unlawful searches, and always keep the camera rolling when authority figures decide the law doesn't apply to them.

Monarch butterfly numbers climbed 64% this season, thanks in part to the growing number of people creating pollinator gardens. It’s a clear reminder of what shared purpose can accomplish. Look what we did
Their recovery is still fragile, though, so continuing, and expanding those plantings next year remains essential.
