Met with "Azov" heroes in Turkey – expressed gratitude for the striving and resilience. @AndriyYermak helped in arranging a meeting with their families. It is an important day, but there is still a long way to go. 🇺🇦 will fight for freedom and returning of each person back home.

Prioritising individual animal welfare can clash with conserving whole species and can risk negative outcomes for biodiversity conservation. An open letter to animal rights folks. Thread 👇

Bammm! A deeply argued and disturbing address to the world leadership, to the leadership at all levels in fact. Global, local. Pay attention, Gretha Thunberg is spot on.
"Let’s be clear — what you are doing is not about climate action or responding to an emergency. It never was. This is communication tactics disguised as politics." Yesterday I adressed the #AustrianWorldSummit along with Angela Merkel, António Guterres, Alok Sharma and others.

Antarctica is enduring some near record-breaking temperatures this week, with Dome Fuji Station (2400km from Scott Base) plunging to -81.7˚C! These temperatures are caused by Southern Ocean westerlies and storms moving around the oceans surrounding Antarctica!

Here's hoping your weekend starts better!
A Northern Royal Albatross chick got quite the crash course when its parent miscalculated its landing! This hilarious footage is from New Zealand’s @docgovtnz Taiaroa Head #RoyalCam. These birds nest on NZ islands and often visit southern Aus waters outside the breeding season.

It is the height of summer & MacGillivray’s prion chicks have started to hatch! 🐣Prions pose one of the greatest identification challenges so no surprise this species was mistaken on Gough for its abundant sister taxon (the broad billed prion) until 2011/12 #seabirdsaturday

Great shame - the Great Auk. Once a common bird of the North Atlantic it was driven to extinction in the mid nineteenth century. ‘Great Auks by Fairhead on the Northern Irish coast’. Oil on canvas. #wildlifeart #birdpainting #irishbirds #extinctirishanimals #extinction
