시대를 앞서간 비전: 이유태의 여성 과학자 초상
일제 시대, 여성의 초상화는 주로 편안한 휴식을 취하고 있는 아름다운 여성을 그린 미인도이거나 아이를 돌보는 어머니의 모습이 대다수였습니다. 1944년 조선미술전람회에서 최고상인 창덕궁상을 수상한 이유태의 〈인물일대-탐구〉(1944)는 당시 매우 드물었을 여성 과학자의 모습을 담고 있습니다. 이 작품을 그리기 위해 작가는 주변을 수소문해 대학 연구실을 빌리고, 친구의 여동생을 모델로 도움을 받았다고 합니다.
일제 시대 이공계대학에 진학했던 400여 명의 조선인 가운데 여성은 단 2명에 불과했을 만큼, 여성 과학자는 만나기 힘든 존재였습니다. 조선인 최초로 제국대학 식물학과를 졸업한 여성 과학자 김삼순 박사(1909-2001)는 1946년 서울대 생물학과 교수가 되었지만 다시 일본으로 건너가 박사학위를 받을 만큼 연구에 열정이 넘쳤고, 세계적 과학학술지 『네이처』에 논문을 발표하기도 했습니다.
2월 11일 오늘은 UN이 지정한 ‘세계 여성과학인의 날’입니다. 한국의 여성 연구자 비율은 2021년 기준 22.2%로 경제협력개발기구 국가 중 최하위입니다. 작품 속 여성 과학자의 모습을 보며, 앞으로 더 많은 여성 과학자가 활약할 수 있기를 기대해 봅니다.

Audrey is the first woman in the world with a Neuralink implant.
She became paralyzed from the neck down at 16 years old. 20 years later, she is now able to use her Neuralink implant to create art. She also has a newfound optimism for life.
