I'm hiring my next Chief of Staff. You won’t know every field I work in. What matters is how quickly you learn, the questions you ask, and whether you can think from first principles. You’ll help evaluate opportunities and work with founders building consequential companies. Technical background preferred. Three-year commitment. Menlo Park, in person. Serious question— deserves to be investigated.
how many foreign sabotage teams are operating on U.S. frontier labs?

The VP is wise to be concerned on this front -- the promise of AI's benefits could also unlock a runaway surveillance state where what remains of our liberty and privacy are dissolved into a panopticon. There is a narrow path to follow...
Replying to @jchristenson_
On AI, VP also said: “I really, really worry about the acceleration of surveillance technology.” “The sort of constant, slow incursion on privacy” is “a much bigger concern [to me] than the robots are going to take over and start killing people.” nypost.com/2026/09/15/us-new…

Well, I’m glad I lived long enough to see “rogue” AI Models hacking other companies become the new status symbol of Silicon Valley— translation— Your AI isn’t the real deal until it can steal… Is any IP safe online anymore? bbc.com/news/articles/cx2kgd…

One of my favorite parts of producing events is watching my wild ideas materialize irl When @poastmilque came to us with the vision for @JoinFAI's American Innovation Reception, the goal was never just another night in SF. It needed to be memorable and purposeful, from the food, to the tech, to the talks, to every other element. What we landed on sat somewhere between a world's fair, an old-world market, a museum, and a state dinner, using Saint Joseph's Arts Society's own grandeur to bring it all together Surprise and delight hidden in every nook and cranny. Hard tech installations not just displayed but designed as museum exhibitions; monumental food: giant wheels of cheese, bread sculptures, charcuterie carved live; blueprints; a six-tier sponsor cake inspired by @NASCAR and @TBPN; conversations with @miramurati and @mkratsios47; drinks with nods to tech lore; and more The most rewarding part is when it's finally done, stepping back and seeing everyone truly get to live in the vision None of it happens without collaborators and trust. Thank you @poastmilque for bringing us in and trusting me and the rest of the Future Trashcan team with the creative direction & logistics. @emmayurochko for somehow holding a thousand moving pieces together. Lea Stafford and team for the museum-quality installations. Sandy Ho and her incredible crew for coming in from nyc to take our wild culinary ideas from concept to reality. Gabrielle at Cake Coquette for building an absolutely gigantic dream of a cake. Lachlan Turczan for transforming the dome into a light installation. @cosmos_raj for beautifully documenting the evening on film. Darci for flying up from LA and getting everyone dancing. @thinkymachines, @HadrianInc, @cognition, @trustvariance, @paradigm, @civ_co, @RainmakerCorpo, @UlyssesInc, @AstroMechanica, Genesis, and Mana for making the evening possible. Saint Joseph's Arts Society for being an incredible partner, @sweetgreen for the perfect late-night surprise, and every artist, vendor, musician, fabricator, installer, and collaborator who helped build the night It takes a lot of ideas and an extraordinary group of people to build one unforgettable evening❤️

We really need a $100/mo Super @grok plan. Coding on the $30/mo plan didn’t last a day. $300/mo is too rich for its current capabilities. I want to like Grok more but they make it hard.

Starting off today by wishing a Happy 250th Birthday to America— the greatest country in the history of Earth. While this great republic has faced many challenges over its 250 year history, the core values remain, and the light of greatness continues to shine ahead for our country.

Extremely excited to share the launch of the new Frontier Legal Defense @JoinFAI that @timhwang will be leading. This effort is crucial to ensuring that America’s new, and emerging technologies have the necessary legal protections to grow, thrive, and lead the world into an elevated era of human/technological engagement.
Some personal news: I'm glad to announce that I'll be leading Frontier Legal Defense at @JoinFAI, a major new initiative that aims to secure the technological frontier in the post-AGI era. FLD will focus on legal advocacy, public interest litigation, and education in the legal profession to defend American progress, prosperity, and freedoms as systems become rapidly more powerful in the near future. Details here and below: thefai.org/posts/fai-launche… -- WASHINGTON, DC — The Foundation for American Innovation (FAI) is proud to announce the launch of Frontier Legal Defense, a major new effort to secure the technological frontier as artificial intelligence becomes dramatically more powerful in the near future. Courts will be the defining arena for existential questions about the future of American AI. This is already obvious: battles around government control and lab autonomy, copyright showdowns, and data center litigation are only the beginning. The U.S. legal system and the precedents set there will increasingly take center stage in an era of congressional gridlock and precedent-setting executive action. In the midst of this, Frontier Legal Defense will be a rapid-response legal team that combats the concentration of power, incumbent rent-seeking, and government overreach in AI that threaten American progress, prosperity, and freedoms. It will conduct the legal advocacy, public interest litigation, and education necessary to counter these many threats. Beyond this, Frontier Legal Defense aims to foster a new generation of lawyers and legal scholars who grasp the paradigm shift AI implies for both the American legal system and way of life. The hardest problems ahead will demand more than applying old doctrines to new facts; they will require novel approaches built by people who pair fine-tuned legal judgment with a deep understanding of the trajectory of this technology. Lawyers who cannot talk about Kurzweil and RSPs as easily as they chat about common law doctrine and interpretive canons need not apply. The Frontier Legal Defense project will be led by FAI General Counsel Tim Hwang. Hwang previously served as the General Counsel of Substack, Inflection AI, and Abridge, and was Google’s first global public policy lead for artificial intelligence and machine learning. “Builders of artificial intelligence have for too long ignored the importance of law and the courts at their peril, and this neglect is now coming home to roost,” said Hwang. “Frontier Legal Defense will be a center for a new generation of lawyers who know in their bones where this technology is headed, and fiercely believe that the law must secure American leadership and the American system as we transition to a post-AGI world.” The project is recruiting exceptional litigators and the resources to back them. Some good news worth sharing with the @JoinFAI community: our colleague @deanwball is joining OpenAI as Head of Strategic Futures on July 6. Few people have shaped AI policy as directly as Dean, from his writing at Hyperdimensional, to his co-authorship of the White House AI Action Plan, to the body of AI governance and technology research he built here at FAI. Putting someone of his caliber at the center of OpenAI’s policy work is good news for continued American leadership at the frontier. Happily, Dean will stay on with us as a non-resident senior fellow, so this is closer to an expansion of our relationship than an exit. Congratulations, Dean. We're proud of you, and proud to keep working alongside you.
I am pleased and honored to announce that, on July 6, I'll be joining @OpenAI as leader of a new team called Strategic Futures. Our mandate will be to help the company's leadership shape frontier AI policy. There is a ton of work to do, and I'm excited to get started.

There is much truth in this statement. Outdated, poorly conceptualized telecom policy ideas, much like old code, need to be deprecated, instead of being viewed as legacy concepts that can be appropriately adopted for the AI policy roadmap.
When I moved to DC to work in tech policy I was disappointed to learn that, in practice, "tech policy" was largely code for "telecom shill." AI policy suffers for it today as seen in all the attempts to extrapolate 90s and 2000s-era telco frameworks far outside of distribution.
