Yeah, and those same female offenders would effectively be denied Legal Aid under LASPO for matters like injunctions against an abusive partner, divorce, custody etc., by having to make an extraordinarily complex application to the LAA to qualify for funding via the DV gateway
3 in 5 female offenders have experienced domestic abuse. 1 in 3 have a history of drug abuse. We’re boosting women’s services funding by £15m to help prison leavers get their lives on track and away from crime. Hear how @BTNWomensCentre supports women: gov.uk/government/news/fundi…

I once walked over the Tyne Bridge to a meeting at Gateshead Civic Centre, and was puzzled to be wished good luck by several people on the High Street. On arriving I expressed my surprise, but was told wearing a suit and tie in Gateshead High Street meant you were due in court.
In January 2007, a woman was refused entry to the UK because immigration officials claimed it was ‘not credible’ that someone wanted to spend a week in Gateshead.

Ministers could extend juryless trials ‘by a stroke of a pen’ Sunday Times page 2 @thetimes by @emilydugan A new power to switch crimes to judge-only hearings without parliamentary scrutiny could be abused by future governments, leading barristers fear “Flora Page KC, who represented victims of the Post Office Horizon scandal in the public inquiry, said: “It’s the power, without any proper parliamentary scrutiny, to create new offences which will have juryless trials that really worries me. It’s bad enough getting rid of juries in serious fraud cases, which troubles me already, but at least that’s out there, that’s in the legislation. What I find really troubling is the idea that any serious or complex case could, by a stroke of a pen and a statutory instrument, become another judge-only trial.” “Let’s say officials or ministers were involved, and the police bring charges because they think that’s appropriate, and then the government could probably do pretty quickly a statutory instrument to say, ‘Right, that’s a judge-only trial’. And then you’ve got a political trial being heard without the sort of public scrutiny it otherwise would have, and without members of the public deciding on guilt or not guilt.” thetimes.com/article/dac2265…
Ministers could extend judge-only trials for MPs ‘with a stroke of a pen’ By @emilydugan in the Sunday Times page 2 and online @thetimes Explaining the democratic risks, shadow Solicitor General, Dr @KieranMullanUK said “We could see all sorts of offences added, and as far as I’m aware there has never been a power for ministers quite like this before — to bypass the full scrutiny of parliament, the way in which we pass the most important laws, when deciding what comes on and off a list of who gets a jury trial.” “Andrew Thomas KC, chairman of the Criminal Bar Association, said the trial without-jury clause in the bill was an “anti-democratic measure” that would “create a system of two-tier justice in our crown courts”. He said: “Judge-only trials could be extended to cases of bribery or misconduct in a public office, where politicians and other powerful people are under scrutiny. ‘Complex’ is not defined.” “Ministers could introduce judge-only trials for politically damaging cases without a vote in parliament because of a clause buried in a bill that has been approved by MPs.

The unprecedented law would mean any type of trial in England and Wales deemed complex or lengthy, other than rape or homicide, could be recategorised as judge-only without the need for a new vote.” Page 2 of the Sunday Times and Full article here thetimes.com/article/dac2265…

The reaction to General Sir Roly Walker’s comments shows just how easily these stories get distorted. People flooding replies to reporters like @haynesdeborah insisting they "won't fight" are missing the point. He wasn't hinting at conscription. He meant economic consent: higher defence budgets mean higher taxes and spending cuts to things the public takes for granted. Personnaly, I think he's talking about the human cost to conflict, too.
Excl. The head of the British Army says Britons must prepare to make sacrifices for war. Sir Roly Walker made the remarks on Wednesday, telling troops the business of soldiering had returned to the nation's psyche and days of not having to think about war were over @ForcesNews

Are ministers right that long, complex fraud prosecutions should be heard by judges sitting alone? @thetimes asks Times law readers Here are two with decades of experience prosecuting and defending cases, complex and less so, all before juries. Lord Sandhurst KC: Ministers are wrong. They ignore the careful report from Jonathan Fisher KC – the very experienced practitioner whom the Serious Fraud Office and the Ministry of Justice commissioned to consider evidence issues and trial management. The government has not even deigned yet to respond to his substantial report which said that there is no need to remove juries from such cases. Nigel Power KC: I have conducted many long fraud trials, some of which have lasted more than six months. In my experience, most jurors remain fully engaged, involved in the details, and enjoy them more than the barristers do.
