Tamworth pigs (Recovering on the Conservation Priority List) are a hardy breed that loves being active and can survive adverse weather, but they do not do as well in summer. Tamworths have a thick, coarse coat, but when they are molting, they are susceptible to sunburn, so they need suitable housing and available mud to protect their skin and keep them cool.
Consider adding Tamworths to your farm, ranch or homestead! Read all about them on our website: livestockconservancy.org/tam…

Why it matters: Every rare breed carries unique genetics, traits, and history that could be lost forever if its population disappears. Conserving these breeds helps protect the genetic diversity agriculture may need for generations to come.
The Livestock Conservancy works to protect nearly 200 rare livestock and poultry breeds through our Conservation Priority List and other conservation programs. And that work makes a difference: this year, the Belgian horse and Silver Fox rabbit graduated from the list!

Looking for a truly versatile heritage breed? The Milking Devon is a triple-purpose breed, traditionally valued for milk, meat, and draft power.
Listed as Critical on the Conservation Priority List, Milking Devons are still prized as draft animals and produce milk similar in quality to Jersey cow milk. Their versatility can make them a good choice for those interested in multi-purpose cattle or a family milk cow.
This historic breed needs more stewards to help secure its future. Learn more with our breed profile: livestockconservancy.org/mil…
