Considering low-carb eating and wondering how to get started?
Where to find answers?
How to monitor progress and implement changes?

We manufactured sugar to solve a nutrition problem, and it caused us great harm.
Robert Cywes, MD, PhD, also known as the @carbaddictiondr, discussed this at the San Diego Symposium in August.
His talk: Radical New Approach In Type 2 Diabetes Management Toward Remission.

A heart surgeon sits down in the doctors' lounge with bacon, four hard-boiled eggs and butter.
He gets some strange looks.
But more and more often, another doctor comes over and says: you're keto, aren't you?
And it turns out they are too.

Not every trip to the fridge starts with hunger.
Ana Rosa, MD, PhD, knows this from her own experience with food addiction.
In this clip, she shares the question she learned to ask herself first.

My interest in fatty liver in lean people grew when I was invited to Asia to help study it. It's a pressing problem there. Many people look metabolically healthy on the scale, but their livers tell a different story.
It isn't unique to Asia. About 1 in 5 people with fatty liver are lean, and about 4 in 10 aren't obese. When the fat tissue under the skin can't expand well, extra fat gets pushed into the liver, even at a normal weight, and it can still lead to inflammation and scarring.
A normal BMI doesn't guarantee a healthy liver. Triglycerides and liver enzymes on routine bloodwork tell a person far more.
I usually like to be behind the scenes, but this'll be fun! Join us! oops, thought I hit post, the recording is up directly after now! :)

Nutrient dense, no dopamine hit, nothing to crave.
The class runs in small groups, everyone testing their glucose and ketones each morning and comparing notes.
Years in addiction medicine taught her that the people who stayed the course were the ones who kept showing up.
Nobody craves a sardine!
That is why @AnnetteBosworth, MD, puts them on the menu.
In her talk at the 2026 Boca Symposium she told us about the 21-day ketogenic class she runs twice a year, and the sardine stretch in the middle of it.

Taking a stand can feel daunting.
But you don't have to do it alone.
That's what The Society of Metabolic Health Practitioners is built for—the resources, the language, and the confidence to bring this into your own practice.
And the Symposium for Metabolic Health is where you meet the people already doing it.
Practitioners further down the same road.
Colleagues who've had the conversation you're putting off.
Patients whose results speak for themselves.
January 29–31, 2027 · The Plaza Hotel, San Antonio
Our first San Antonio symposium, with a full day dedicated to food addiction.

Join us, network, and leave with a way to implement ketogenic therapies in practice.
They're eating low carb, they know it works, and they're still not telling their patients.
Philip Ovadia, MD - @ifixhearts - is a heart surgeon who travels the country filling in at hospitals.
He still gets the occasional side-eye in the doctors' lounge for a breakfast of bacon, eggs, and butter.
But he sees reason for hope.
Because he keeps finding doctors who are low carb themselves.
Doctors who know it works, because they're living it.
They're just not passing it on to the patients in front of them.

He walked through the relationship between ketones and the heart muscle.

He also gave insight into the peer-reviewed study he co-authored on a ketogenic diet in patients with overweight or obesity and heart failure.
The idea that low-carb and keto are bad was a fantasy made up in somebody's mind.
That is how Eric Westman, MD, MHS, - @drericwestman - closed his talk at the Boca Symposium in January.
He brought his research to the stage.
His talk: Treating heart failure with a keto diet.
So exciting!! Well done everyone, congratulations!!!

His message is that patients who don't improve aren't a lost cause!
More often, the standard approach is aimed at the wrong target.
Address the metabolic root causes instead of managing symptoms with more prescriptions, and outcomes can change.

That's never been Mark Mealy's experience here.
A certified health coach and co-founder of Total Health & Wellness.
Mark has been coming to the Symposium since 2019—first as one of the "regular everyday people," and he keeps coming back because every single year, the science is dynamic, changing, and genuinely new.
