Vice President JD Vance told CBS News on Thursday that anybody who is "selling access to the White House" should "suffer consequences." His comment came after CBS Evening News' Tony Dokoupil pointed to a string of recent reports, including President Trump's staggering cryptocurrency earnings, and the ousting of U.S. Ambassador to Greece Kimberly Guilfoyle over allegations she asked a man who was seeking help from the Trump administration to wire her $100,000. cbsn.ws/4BaVsg1

Election security is the foundation of a functioning democracy. What is happening is a deliberate effort to diminish election security, reduce defenses, and degrade Americans' faith in their own elections. The intent is clear, degrade American's faith in their own elections.
Worth adding what CISA's own acting director showed state officials when they finally got him on a call, since it tells you more than any budget line item. Democratic secretaries of state pressed Andersen on whether threat briefings and system testing would resume before November. He gave noncommittal answers, blamed government shutdowns, and told them some services might not come back until 2027, after the election they're actually worried about. Meanwhile the same administration hired a 2020 election denier to oversee election integrity and is threatening to jail state officials who don't hand over voter data. Arizona's secretary of state put it plainly: that's not the posture an ally takes. That's what an adversary would do. He was talking about his own country's cybersecurity agency. theatlantic.com/national-sec…

Members of The Steady State, Martha Duncan and Doug Clapp, co-authored one of our most important recent essays: "We Took an Oath. It Has No Expiration Date." In this video, they sat down for a short, (virtual) conversation about why they felt compelled to write it, the ideas behind it, and why its message matters now more than ever. This got me choked up. Ohio, thank you for this. 🙏🏽 And God bless Viles Dorsainvil, Exec Director of the Haitian Support Center. Haitians aren’t criminals. They were here legally under TPS until the Trump administration stripped those protections. Yet we’re humiliating them by forcing them to wear ankle monitors and sending them back to a Level 4: Do Not Travel country. If it’s too dangerous for Americans to visit, why is it acceptable to force Haitian families to return?

Another person has been killed by ICE. Members of the Steady State who have served in the CIA, DIA, NSA, and State Department have witnessed, analyzed, and reported on the actions of authoritarian regimes abroad. We've seen how dictators create police and military forces that are more loyal to them than to their own country. We've seen those forces commit unconstitutional and unlawful acts of violence to intimidate and coerce populations into submission. Most importantly, we've seen how entire societies become desensitized to that violence, eventually accepting it as a normal part of daily life. As Americans, as citizens of a democracy, we cannot accept these kinds of actions by our federal government. If we allow them to go unchecked, we risk having our most fundamental freedoms taken from us.

Bragging that every “single man or woman…who had anything to do with” the criminal investigations of President Trump at DOJ and the FBI has been fired, resigned, or pushed into early retirement is something Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche now boasts about publicly. That is a bizarre thing for the country’s second‑ranking law enforcement official to celebrate. He is either admitting that he does not understand that his job is to safeguard an impartial Justice Department, or he is consciously and proudly telling the country that he is serving as a corrupt political tool of the president. zurl.co/zGHUK

zurl.co/EwaIa Leadership depends on something larger than any one person. It depends on institutions that encourage independence and insist on accountability, and respect for the rule of law. Robert S. Mueller III embodied that standard. Remembrances from the Author.
