The web didn't become infrastructure because everyone used the same browser.
It became infrastructure because different people could build on the same underlying layer.
Social should work the same way.
Farcaster needs a new steward. Many worry who will buy it and what they will do to it. The fix is easy. Get the protocol past the point where it needs a steward. Clients will come and go.
I heard in the recent fc community call that if you can't run a client directly off the protocol, then the protocol is not complete. Complete means more than just read and write. You should be able to replay and verify the whole history, without trusting whoever pays the s3 infra bill. Also the canonical record should not depend on a handful of validator keys from the steward itself. We're crypto. Let's do crypto.
A lot has changed in Ethereum since Farcaster and Lens were born. Blobs are extremely exciting. Data is pruned but commitments are kept. Anyone can rehost this pruned data anywhere (laptop, pinning services, clients) and this data can be verified against the chain. Batched and compressed writes get cheap enough that any client can sponsor them. Or you could be a punk and pay for your posts, follows, blocks and more.
Ethereum can and should become the superset of all social. A future where anyone can read, write, verify and rebuild. Social can be a public good, not something you rent. If there is onchain state that is replicable then the stewards can come and go. That's what I want to build. New social. Less centralization. Let's be friends and do this together.

we’ve started a process to look for a new home / team to run the products going forward.
earlier this year, this seemed to be a good fit for our team: it was a developer-first network, and we'd been serving developers from the start. There’s been a lot of change since then and we’re not the right fit for what’s needed next.
talking to a few teams we think could be a good fit for running decentralized social apps and related developer products. If you’ve thoughts / are interested, reach out.
our company will return its balance sheet (most of it remains) and team members will move on to something new.
this is not a decision we made lightly. I’m optimistic that with this next iteration, Farcaster will find its long term fit.

Privacy without losing trust.
Identity without permanent exposure.
Reputation without giving up pseudonymity.
We've lived in the top half for a long time. The interesting work now is in the bottom half, and beyond.
The endgame isn't one universal identity.
It's infrastructure where trust travels without identity having to.
