My heart breaks for all those clever collies...
I have the pleasure of sharing life with a beautiful and sensitive collie for the past year and a half. I adore Milo (4yo) and he will never need another home for as long as he lives. We do our very best by him, he is never alone, we've engaged trainers, he has lots of novel experiences and long walks off lead etc. However, having previously had experience only of lurchers and labs, we find his behaviour challenging and we often struggle to manage him. I once heard it said that collies would gnaw through their own brains for stimulation 馃槩 The sad fact of the matter is that only very few owners can meet such complex needs. This makes most people unsuited to collies (as opposed to collies being unsuitable as pets!). I don't know what the solution is - this is simply another in a very long list of ethical and welfare issues surrounding breeding, feeding, ownership etc. of our most faithful friends.
