The whole point of art, in fact the point of engaging with another person's thoughts in any capacity, is to expand your very limited individual perspective on the world, not to live in a tiny box perfectly catered to your adolescent personal tastes

One way the iffy vibes around this change could immediately change: a healthy AG who delivers on a promising start to last season and finds himself in the all-star conversation. Jamal had his year. Maybe time for AG to have his?
Aaron Gordon has been the main character through training camp and two preseason games. That's music to every Nuggets fan's ears. He's still the 𝑺𝑶𝑼𝑳 of this team. ✍️ @BrendanVogt 🔗 thednvr.com/nuggets/standout…

Feels like the shooter always blows the shot after a banger like this one. So hat tip to Cam for draining it and completing the highlight.
Jok is ALREADY doin' this kind of stuff...

I have some students who are more capable than ever before. But the middle has really fallen out. They've been pushed to extremes, mostly due to the varied resources available to them. And yes, it's heartbreaking; for the students, for the faculty, for us all.
Replying to @Tyler_A_Harper
Many, many professors at a wide variety of different kinds of schools (elite and not) are reporting that their students are less prepared and less capable than ever. Perhaps some professors make these observations in ways that are unkind, but mostly they scan to me as anguished.

So... a lot of talk today about what's on the record, and what's off the record. It should be a delicate balance. My own interesting experience with this happened in 2011. I got a 15-minute interview with Adrian Peterson during the lockout, and it didn't take long for him to go off on the situation. At one point, Peterson said that the NFL owners were subjecting players to "modern-day slavery." You may remember that particular headline. I immediately stopped the interview and asked Peterson if he realized what he just said, and what the damage could be. I said that if he wanted to roll back time about 20 seconds and make that off the record, I would respect that. He said... actually insisted... that it was on the record. Then, he repeated it at maximum volume to remove any doubt. Editorial where I worked at the time wasn't really equipped to deal with it, and I was a noob. Didn't know what to do. I wrote it up and published it. Peterson's agent contacted me and said that I would never have access to any of his clients ever again. He then implied that I made the whole thing up. I responded that I had the entire interview on a digital recording, and I'd be happy to e-mail it to him. I was not engaging in gotcha journalism. I had Peterson's explicit permission (encouragement) to put it out there. I sent the full audio, and never heard another word about it. The point is, I believe we who capture the thoughts of prominent people have an obligation to at least make sure that confidential thoughts are kept as such. Sometimes, we speak off the cuff with emotion and say things we don't mean to say, and we don't always understand the process of making sure some things aren't placed in the public domain. This is not to say that we are responsible for sanitizing anything for anybody. But we are responsible to ensure that the stories we get are gotten fairly. Re: what happened to Mike Macdonald, I don't believe that his interviewer got a story worth violating that implied trust. Because there is no story worth violating that trust.

Just checked out this White House app. Under “accomplishments,” it lists… 1) Gas prices from seven months ago, before the Iran war (they’re now more than $1.50 per gallon higher — $4.48, per AAA) 2) The inflation rate from seven months ago, before the Iran war (the most recent rate, for August, was a full percentage point higher, 3.4%) 3) GDP growth from three quarters ago (the most recent available quarter, Q2 2026, was nearly three points lower, 1.5%) In summary, it may possibly be helpful to consume news from news outlets.

I already didn't think highly of these literary awards, but their reputation is absolutely in the gutter right now
On AI capabilities: the French press is all over the Haitian-Canadian novel C’était ça ou mourir. It's winning basically every award you can win, and was tipped to be the 2nd Canadian winner of the Prix Goncourt. Only one problem: 1/2

Sort of surprised to see a new Atlantic piece about AI detectors and how professors are reshaping their classrooms with no real discussion of the move to in-class writing

When you write to please a machine, you enter into a feedback loop that may not benefit your learning. While some writing tasks are straightforward and don’t necessarily require much process work, the type of long-form and engaged writing many college courses call upon does.
