The Special Executive, Britain’s first superhero group. A badge. Keepsakes. The silver lining was him, still in the book. And Meggan. The first time. (The Wolverine strip was inconsequential.) Just the fan poster that keeps circulating and the question it always raises: too obvious or exactly the face the costume needs? We'd go total 'Crooked World' with the FURY and MAD Jim Jaspers with the SPECIAL Executive guest staring! Brian Braddock is magic, Merlin (can we have that with a why? Because we gotta...), and a slightly awkward physicist who got the job by choosing the amulet over the sword. Cavill can do the physical side in his sleep. Peter oversleeps, the Dean boxes him into boarding an exchange student from Thames University, fifty dollars a week and then worries the guest might see the costume. Brian sees the costume. They fight. Then Arcade. We were not overly fussed by Arcade... (or the story.) The caption was the thing. (The cover was dynamite to be fair... 🧨) "Your last chance to see Captain Britain in his original form!" The hive mind raced. What on earth did they mean by that? The costume, though. Outrageously great. Better than Spidey’s iconic one, in our humble view. And Spidey was patronising again. Hard, being a world-class trademark... Captain Britain Month. 🇬🇧 How we found him. Day 2. You could be forgiven for wondering what the book was. Full colour, October 1976. 10p. The newest and greatest. A mask free inside. Marvel UK’s first colour comic. Half a year and the weekly was gone into Spider-Man. Super Spider-Man and Captain Britain. Distribution terrible. Titles merging. (We got shouted at for looking in a box of comics...) The original weekly was colour. The reprint we met was not. We took the grey... 🩶 Parkhouse, Tolkien in a cape. Stokes’ line. Neary keeping it moving while Brian freaked out, almost trying to wake up. Woodland. A cave. A beach. Not Cornwall’s mines. A dream hunting the mind. Was this Lord of the Rings, or a superhero strip? Kirby’s Eternals sat in the same black and white and looked just as strange. Like a mist come in from the sea. The details of our life are vague, formless. ⏳ We don’t know. We didn’t either. Friday Indie Comic Focus. 💬 The Antagonists - Tyler F. Martin ( @tytheanimator), Godhood Comics. "THE ANTAGONISTS is my original comic series about married, retired supervillains raising their super-powered children in hiding while being pursued by the heroes of old and a shady government organization. Like THE BOYS and INVINCIBLE, it critiques the superhero genre with familiar tropes and pastiches while telling an original story. It showcases the hypocrisy of good vs. evil, political establishments, and judgment." Destructus and Ultima, twenty years off the board, suburbia instead of a throne. Calvin and Tonya Eval. The old heroes and a government outfit still at the glass. Noir moral contrast, not a costume parade: good and evil wearing each other’s clothes, judgment as the real costume.
