In Memory of Nick Virgilio This is my humble homage to the late Nick Virgilio, a world-renowned poet and master of haiku who once lived just across the alley from my childhood row home in Camden, New Jersey. Growing up, I was too young to truly understand or appreciate the genius living practically in my backyard. Truth be told, even today, I don’t completely grasp the art of haiku or the ability to capture so much meaning in so few words. But I have come to appreciate his talent, his accomplishments, and the legacy he left behind. Now, having only recently embarked on my own journey as a writer, I have gained a newfound respect for what it takes to put words on paper, attach your name to them, and send them out into the world for others to read, interpret, embrace, or criticize. There is a certain vulnerability in that. You’re putting a piece of yourself out there, never knowing how it will be received. Nick Virgilio did that with extraordinary grace, turning a handful of carefully chosen words into something that could touch people around the world. And to think, all those years ago, that kind of genius was living just across a narrow Camden alley from a kid who had no idea what he was witnessing. I wish I had been old enough, or wise enough, to appreciate it then. I certainly appreciate it now. Rest in peace, Nick Virgilio. Your words live on, and Camden should never forget one of its own.
