Ag. Registrar Mandates DRs as Management's Official Voice Ahead of Registry Symposium
The Ag. Registrar, Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin, Mr. Abdulhafis Amin, has called on all Deputy Registrars in the institution to serve as the official voice of Management within their respective institutes, units and centres.
Amin made this call recently while addressing Deputy Registrars ahead of the forthcoming maiden Registry Symposium scheduled for Tuesday next week.
The Ag. Registrar said this has become necessary to disseminate accurate information and curb the spread of rumours among staff, ensuring that everyone is properly informed.
He expressed strong disapproval of how rumours are damaging the Polytechnic's peaceful environment and fostering disunity among staff, emphasizing that it is the primary duty of Deputy Registrars, as the chief administrative officers in their areas, to actively correct misinformation.
Amin clarified that reports concerning grievances and salary reviews, which have been cited as major issues, have not been approved by either the Management or the Ministry of Tertiary Education, contrary to claims circulating on social media.
He urged the Deputy Registrars to embrace their responsibilities as chief administrative officers whose role is to support Institute Directors in fostering a safe, peaceful, and conducive atmosphere across the institution. This proactive approach, he said, is vital to maintaining a positive and productive working environment for all staff members.
Regarding discipline, the Ag. Registrar addressed concerns about the attitude of registry staff toward their duties, stressing that allegations suggest registry staff are significantly contributing to the current challenges facing the institution.
He called for these perceptions to be corrected through diligent supervision of subordinates, the dissemination of accurate information, and the faithful execution of duties in accordance with Polytechnic regulations.
Some Deputy Registrars who participated in the meeting acknowledged a decline in discipline among the Polytechnic's non-teaching staff.
They noted that many staff members disregard their oath of secrecy, stressing that it is disheartening that senior non-teaching staff, who should be guiding junior colleagues, are themselves involved in spreading rumours and misleading others.
The Deputy Registrars appealed to registry staff to act as positive ambassadors for the Registry Department by avoiding actions that could tarnish the institution's reputation.
Furthermore, the Deputy Registrars called upon Management to increase efforts toward securing the restoration of the Polytechnic's subvention from the State Government. They highlighted that without this crucial financial support, implementing the proposed salary review will be extremely difficult.
They pointed out that other tertiary institutions in the State that have implemented new salary structures are receiving government subventions, unlike the Polytechnic, which heavily relies on Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) to cover staff salaries and operational costs.
The meeting concluded with a mandatory call for all registry staff, regardless of level, to attend the upcoming symposium. The Registrar announced that attendance is compulsory, as questions for the Computer-Based Test (CBT) promotion examinations will be drawn directly from the discussions and information shared during the symposium. – at Ilorin, Nigeria
