I wrote about a glaring issue with I83. Are @DCDemocrats aware that their voters will not have a voice in the second At-Large seat? I'm not against rank choice, but this impl is bad washingtonsocialist.mdcdsa.o…

If we want to fix this issue, we need to get serious about enforcing fair housing laws, coming down on slumlords who warehouse voucherholders, and cleaning up the mess that is DCHA. We shouldn't start by making life harder on people already struggling to make ends meet.
Finally an actually good and informed take on housing in DC
Underlying this article is a basic misunderstanding of how the voucher program actually works, the history of the payment standard, and a hostility toward voucherholders that harkens back to 1990's "welfare queen" fear mongering.

As the Council thinks about spending tax dollars more efficiently in our current budget context, here’s one place to start. The city could help far more residents with housing if it had a reasonable payment standard. capitalcommonsense.com/p/dc-…

Raising revenue and using our dollars effectively aren't mutually exclusive things - in fact, we need both.
We've seen over a decade of mismanaged contracts and patronage by the Bowser admin, and I'm looking forward to working with our new mayor on where we can save costs.

Chris Rabb: “I’m a decarceration person, I believe the country that represents 5% of the world’s population, but 25% of the people put in cages is morally wrong, but I will make an exception for all of those fuckers who are lawless MAGA thugs who have destroyed lives and communities. Lock all of those fuckers up. If there are moms who are going to jail because they changed what school district they are so their kids could get a better education, you better believe a Jared Kushner should be experiencing some jail time”

Trump has ordered the National Guard to occupy DC through the next presidential transition. His federal agents have detained political dissidents and murdered people in broad daylight.
Going after political opponents is the next escalation in his abuse of state power.

This fundamental difference in values was the core of the election.
How does DC respond to economic downturns? After historic layoffs, immigrants afraid to go to work, & ERAP falling short, do we try to address why people can’t pay rent or just take an axe to tenant protections?
Replying to @aparnafordc @AshleySchapitl
I think any developer would say that investment in DC is more complicated than TOPA yes/no and also that adding tenant protections when DC leads the nation in rental nonpayment will raise eyebrows

Full TOPA restoration means people have a say in what happens to their home.
Pathways to homeownership, forming a co-op, or even just getting necessary fixes and agreements from a future landlord.
We had universal TOPA until 2018 and periods of development booms with it!

The Kennedy Center discourse from non-DC Twitter is frustrating. Y’all are quick to criticize people being angry about our theatre being destroyed, but it’s crickets when it comes to the fact that DC has been under MILITARY OCCUPATION for over a year.

This is one of those issues that shows how much political discourse is controlled by conservatives because there is really no good argument for why hundreds of thousands of American citizens shouldn't have any political representation except "they probably wouldn't vote for GOP."

The Art All Night scene in Mt. Pleasant tonight is the perfect case for shutting down the street to cars for the night. Huge crowds, very cool scene, lots of crowding on sidewalks.

Objectively insane take. Someone /thinks/ you committed a crime, you deserve to be bounced. That's leaving aside the unethical opps landlords have to evict whoever they don't like for any reason (I've seen landlords do some crazy shit, having a friend fake a call is nothing)
Advocates again the RENTAL Act pointed out that this would be an issue. As imperfect as our system is, it is at least ostensibly based on the principle of innocent until proven guilty. This guy may have been violent, but what if he isn't and was kicked out for nothing?
Replying to @maustermuhle
The Public Defender Service has weighed in on behalf of the D.C. man, arguing that allowing an eviction to proceed before a court has determined some level of guilt for a violent crime could raise constitutional concerns of self-incrimination and lack of a jury trial.
Great piece on the importance of avoiding calling the DC Council the "DC City Council" and the importance of words in the fight for autonomy washingtonsocialist.mdcdsa.o…. @tomsherwood you might like this!
