🔎 A new resource for those following nuclear disarmament verification.
Hugh Chalmers (@vertic_org) presents a new web-based compendium bringing together information related to the proposed establishment of a Group of Scientific and Technical Experts on Nuclear Disarmament Verification (GSTE-NDV) within the United Nations disarmament machinery.
The resource provides a dedicated reference point for information on the proposed group and the broader discussion surrounding scientific and technical expertise in nuclear disarmament verification.

The general debate of the 81st Session of the General Assembly’s First Committee (Disarmament and International Security) is underway in New York.
Deputy Permanent Representative, Mrs.Irene M. Juru, delivered Zimbabwe’s national statement today, on behalf of the Permanent Representative, Ambassador Taonga Mushayavanhu.
In the statement, Zimbabwe:
• called for renewed efforts towards nuclear disarmament and the balanced implementation of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (#NPT);
• urged the remaining Annex II States to sign and ratify the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (#CTBT);
• Called for peaceful uses of outer space, enhanced cybersecurity and the regulation of autonomous weapons systems.
Zimbabwe further signposted that, in its 2027-2028 tenure on the United Nations Security Council, it would place priority on countering the illicit flow of small arms and light weapons and continue to advance the African Union’s Silencing the Guns initiative.

A new study finds that 67% of US respondents support the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons which calls for nuclear abolition. But only 22% of those respondents support reducing the US nuclear arsenal.
How to square the difference?

Humanity has lived under the nuclear shadow for more than eight decades.
We must ensure that future generations do not.
Let’s replace threats with dialogue, arms racing with arms control, paralysis with concrete action, and choose a future free from nuclear weapons.

A robust global nuclear security regime is essential. Any State could be affected by an act of nuclear terrorism, and a strong international legal framework is fundamental to preventing nuclear material from being used to cause harm.
Today, I addressed the Preparatory Committee for the 2027 Conference of the Amendment to the Convention on the Physical Protection of Nuclear Material A/CPPNM - the only legally binding agreement in the area of physical protection of nuclear material and facilities. The work starts now to lay the foundations for a successful conference next April and ensure the Convention remains fit for purpose.
