Sensex at a P/E of 19:
What could the next 10 years look like?
Here is a fascinating lesson from 35 years of market history.
Over 30 occasions, the Sensex was valued at around 19 times its earnings.
What happened to investors who stayed invested for the next 10 years?
Not once did they earn negative returns.
Mostly, 10-year returns were in double digits.
👉Returns were lower during periods of severe stress, including rising NPAs, weakening corporate earnings and a sharply depreciating rupee.
But the big lesson is this:
A P/E of 19 may not promise spectacular returns. But historically, it has offered a reasonable starting point for long-term wealth creation.
Think of it this way:
When you buy a business at a sensible price, you don’t need its profits to grow spectacularly to make money over time. You need patience, earnings growth and the ability to stay invested.
The shorter the horizon, the more unpredictable the outcome. The longer the horizon, the more room earnings have to work in your favour.
Markets may disappoint you over months or even years. But history suggests that, at these valuations, a 10-year investor has had a very different experience from a 5-year investor.
Don’t confuse a lack of excitement with a lack of opportunity.
Past performance does not guarantee future returns. Valuations, earnings growth and economic conditions can change.
