They buy drugs at steep discounts, bill patients and insurers the full price, and pocket the difference. These aren’t small rural clinics struggling to stay open. They’re massive hospital chains with armies of lobbyists in Washington fighting to keep anyone from checking how they spend the money. Zero real oversight is a recipe for fraud. Just look at what recently happened in Florida: a Haitian immigrant fraudster used a fake nonprofit clinic to rip off $58 million through 340B. He bought a $2.5 million mansion, a Bentley, and a fleet of Mercedes. Now, he’s headed to prison and is facing a deportation. Good riddance! The new pilot finally adds basic accountability. Instead of handing out automatic discounts up front and hoping for the best, it verifies eligibility with actual claims data before the money moves. Predictably, the hospital lobby is screaming that this will “threaten the safety net.” If billions of dollars in taxpayer-backed drug discounts are flowing every year, making sure they actually reach patients shouldn’t be controversial.
