Huge thanks to my co-authors @liacarvalhais and @marijn_kuijpers !
Check out our new preprint! We combine EM data, genetically encoded tools and single-cell electrophysiology to investigate mitochondria at the AIS, where they cluster and strongly buffer Ca2+. Surprising: they don't impact electrophysiological properties.

Myelin is widely believed to protect axons from damage in multiple sclerosis. A study in @NatureNeuro challenges this view and finds that myelin insulation renders axons more vulnerable to degeneration in an autoimmune environment. go.nature.com/44sSkee

Vacancy Alert💼Technical assistant electron microscopy. To better understand and improve myelin recovery, we aim to visualize the onset of myelin recovery at the ultrastructural level. You are responsible for the preparatory work an EM execution. nin.nl/vacancies/technical-a…
For those visiting the Dutch Neuroscience Meeting right now, if you're interested in the cisternal organelle be sure to check out poster 2.10 today by my lab mate Lia!

Researchers at the Netherlands Institute for Neuroscience have discovered that the energy management of inhibitory brain cells is different compared to excitatory cells in our brain. Why is that the case and what is the link with multiple sclerosis?

Parvalbumin basket cell myelination accumulates axonal mitochondria to internodes ift.tt/8nfreY9
It is out! We found myelin-dependent clustering of mitochondria in parvalbumin interneurons but not L2/3 pyramidal neurons. Myelin sheaths also effectively attenuate mitochondrial calcium responses. Read all about it in the open access paper linked below! nature.com/articles/s41467-0…

Also come check out our exciting collaboration with @paolo_papale and @LarsMuckli, we compared responses to visual feedforward and contextual stimuli across species. S03-481, Monday morning! #FENS2022

Are you attending #FENS? Are you interested in mitochondria, myelin, parvalbumin interneurons, or better yet, all three? Then come visit my poster on Tuesday, S05-264! We show the dependency of mitochondrial position and function on the myelin sheath in PV axons.

If you're at #FENS, come visit my poster! I'll be presenting the zeta-test for neuronal responsiveness with its newest addition: it now also works for time-series data, like calcium imaging. Still better than t-tests and ANOVAs!

Poster S03-480
New paper out in eLife!🎉
It describes a new binning-less & parameter-free statistical test for neuronal responsiveness. No more binning, regularizing or parameter tuning! Now you can use the ZETA-test: simpler than a t-test, and better than an ANOVA! 1/

I'm presenting at #FENS2022! If you're interested in chandelier cells, come find me at poster S04-564. We studied connectivity and physiology of chandelier cells in mouse visual cortex. Hope to see you there!
How does myelination of PV interneurons affect the mitochondria of these fast-spiking cells? Turns out it clusters mitochondria and controls their calcium buffering! Check out our new preprint: biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/…
