Donkey Kong only exists because Nintendo couldn’t get the Popeye licence in time. The original idea was Popeye saving Olive Oyl from Bluto. When that fell through, Popeye became Jumpman, Olive became Pauline, and Bluto became a giant ape. Mario was born from a licensing problem.
