My latest @InstFreeSpeech blog post, examining Gorsuch's use of a "Sword of Damocles" quotation in First Choice v. Davenport. The quotation illuminates the frightening, unconstitutional, and undemocratic nature of restrictive campaign speech regulations ifs.org/blog/using-a-sword-t…

President Trump’s decision to lift sanctions on Russian fuel amidst Putin’s ongoing and brutal attacks on civilian targets in Ukraine makes no sense and is a betrayal of the legacy and leadership of the late Senator Lindsey Graham. While Ukraine fights for its survival, Putin’s war machine continues to prosecute his terrorist war on civilian populations and innocent Ukrainians are dying every day. Now, Instead of implementing the tough sanctions Lindsey Graham fought to his last breath to enact, President Trump has announced the United States is lifting sanctions on Russian energy, fueling the Putin’s war machine. As I saw firsthand in Ukraine last month, Putin is losing this war. Ukraine has fought the Russian military to a standstill and reinvented warfare with drones taking the fight into the heart of Russia. America should not be throwing a lifeline to Putin’s war machine. Now is the time to stand strong against Russian aggression as we did during the first Trump administration. Putin doesn’t want peace. Putin wants Ukraine. I have no doubt that if Putin overruns Ukraine, it will only be a matter of time until Russia’s military crosses a border that our troops will have to deal with him. America is the Leader of the Free World. For our National Security, for the security of our Allies in Europe including Ukraine, President Trump should rescind this deal immediately and return to the strong policies of our four years in the White House; impose harsh sanctions on any nation purchasing Russian energy and work with our allies to ensure Ukraine has the military support it needs to repel and defeat this Russian invasion once and for all. Ithaca's government would be wise to reject this unconstitutional moratorium on Cornell student groups obtaining city permits for protests and other expressive activities. Citing the alleged sexual assault at a fraternity house, the mayor claims the moratorium is necessary to reduce sexual violence and protect public safety. That's absurd. Barring every student group from obtaining permits for expressive activities bears no reasonable relationship to that goal. The moratorium would apply even to groups with no connection to the incident and to activities that pose no real threat to public safety. It would simply impose guilt by association, which the Supreme Court has called "a philosophy alien to the traditions of a free society and the First Amendment itself."
We’ve now submitted public comments urging Ithaca’s Common Council to reject the moratorium. Permit decisions should be based on neutral, objective standards, not @Cornell affiliation. We stand ready to work with the city to protect public safety without burdening speech.

It is with a heavy heart, and much sadness, that I must announce that my mom, Rae Knowles, passed away in the early hours of this morning. She was 81. We are relieved that she is no longer suffering from the horrible disease that is Alzheimer's. There will be no funeral; just a small private graveside service. John and I ask that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Anita's Stevens Swan Humane Society in Utica, NY 📷

Heavy-handed campaign speech laws don't shield democracy, they wield a sword against political participation. Read the new blog by IFS Research Director @KnowlesGardner on how these laws function as a "sword of Damocles" ifs.org/blog/using-a-sword-t…
