Africa Day is more than a celebration of our heritage; it is a reminder of our shared journey, our common aspirations and the immense potential that lies within our continent.
During the Africa Day 2026 celebrations marking the 63rd anniversary of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), I reflected on the progress Africa has made and the work that still lies ahead in building a peaceful, prosperous and integrated continent.
The celebrations brought together African nations in a rich showcase of culture, cuisine, music, fashion and heritage, highlighting the diversity that makes our continent unique while reinforcing the unity that gives us strength.
As Africans, we must continue drawing inspiration from the vision of our founding leaders and remain committed to the aspirations of Agenda 2063. Our unity must translate into greater trade, stronger institutions, more opportunities for young people, increased investment and sustainable economic growth that improves the lives of our citizens.
I also underscored the need to intensify efforts to prevent and resolve conflicts across the continent, support affected communities and strengthen African-led solutions through institutions such as the African Union, IGAD and the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region.
Africa’s future will be shaped by Africans. By working together, investing in our people and harnessing our collective strengths, we can build a continent that is peaceful, prosperous and a respected force in global affairs.
