Newborns are particularly vulnerable to infection so all visitors must wash their hands before touching baby and avoid kissing them. We call this our THANKS guidance – Think Hands And No KisseS. Check out our posts from the THANKS launch event back in mid-October.

If you’re visiting a new baby (i.e. they’re not part of your household), always wash your hands before touching and don’t kiss them on the face. It’s also important not to visit at all if you’re ill or have been recently. Watch our brand-new animation on infection prevention here

Pregnant or have a new baby? Tag the people who are likely to visit you so that they know how to protect your baby from infection.

Babies can’t tell us how they’re feeling but here are some clues you can look out for. Trust your instincts – if you feel something isn’t right with your baby, contact a healthcare professional. More info: bit.ly/45Ebga9 #ParentingJourney #NewBaby

ALT Your baby might have a serious infection if they are difficult to wake, appear floppy, are irritable and won’t settle, have a mottled or blotchy appearance, have difficulty breathing or are breathing unusually, have a rash or sores/blisters, have a temperature above 38°C or below 36°C, have a high-pitched or abnormal cry, have fewer than 2-3 wet nappies in 24hrs

Achoo! 😷 It’s important not to visit a baby if you are ill or have been ill recently. Infections that might be mild in older children or adults can be life-threatening for babies. So, even if you just feel unwell, it’s best not to visit and rearrange for when you are recovered.

Kissing a young baby can put them at risk of serious infection. Our survey of 2,300 new and expectant parents showed more than half are unaware of this. Young babies have immature immune systems so are extremely vulnerable to infection. Press release here: bit.ly/46UwD83

1 in 3 parents wouldn’t ask people to wash their hands before letting them hold their new baby. But infections that are considered mild (e.g. cold sore virus) can be life-threatening to babies. All visitors should avoid kissing young babies & wash their hands before touching.
