If you want healthy relationships, you need to learn how to repair things properly when you’ve hurt someone. When you mistreat someone you care about, saying you’re sorry is only part of the process. You also need to acknowledge what happened, understand how it affected them, and address the behavior that caused the hurt. Waiting a few days and hoping everything goes back to normal isn’t an apology. Calling them and acting as though nothing happened isn’t an apology. Suddenly becoming extra sweet because you hope they’ll forget how you treated them isn’t an apology either. You cannot repair a problem you’re unwilling to acknowledge. And you cannot expect someone to move past an experience you’ve refused to discuss. If you genuinely care about the relationship, have the uncomfortable conversation. Take responsibility, listen to their feelings, and make a real effort to change what needs changing.
