We’re paying the salary of this intellectual titan.

I’m not. A lot of people died. A lot of people were killed. Brutal. But yet the Chinese largely respect Mao. Ask yourself why. Because there are many countries where they absolutely despise their strongmen or even put up museums to display the brutality of previous dictators. China is not one of those countries.
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
It is not permitted to publicly criticise Mao in China.

The Aussie selectors are really bad. Maddinson made streaky 48 in the first test but the rest went the way there were always going to go. Was Maddinson really a better choice than Konstas, McSweeney, Patterson, Harris, Weatherald et al?

First Danny Kruger, now Robert Jenrick. Why do these gutless turncoats find it so hard to answer whether calling Kemi Badenoch a “Nigerian scammer” is racist?
If Raheem Kassam is just “a journalist”, and not a key part of Nigel’s inner circle, why are they protecting him?
‘Is calling Kemi Badenoch a “Nigerian scammer” racist, yes or no?’
‘…I’m not on your show to talk about what a journalist has tweeted.’
Reform's Robert Jenrick refuses to engage with @Lewis_Goodall's question about Raheem Kassam's comments on the Tory leader.
What are you playing at @TomMcTague?
Owen Jones has, for the last three years, revealed himself to be a man of enormous courage, integrity and truthfulness. No one should think for a minute that his relentless defence of Palestinian rights and historical truth is easy or comes without heavy personal costs. Throughout the genocide in Gaza, Jones remained a tireless bur rigorous and supremely decent voice. I suspect part of what initially moved him was the strong displeasure in being treated like an idiot by the official propaganda – a noble motive in itself – but there is no question he has been genuinely touched by the images of suffering arriving daily from Gaza. And yet, how does his intellectual fixation on a battle between left and right help us understand the horrors of Gaza, or move us to stop them? My impression is that the opposite has happened. People look at what is happening in Gaza and ask themselves what a person on the right or on the left should think. In many cases this is ideology. In most, simply careerism and group association. Jones shows how limited the perspective really is. How about, like the author himself, asking how a human being should feel? How about returning to the world of facts and feelings rather than our endless Marvel franchise? newstatesman.com/culture/boo…

I have generally valued the intellectual integrity of your publications. Although I disagree with much of what appears in the New Statesman, I remain an avid reader because I believe in understanding opposing views and broadening my perspective.
But publishing this piece about Owen Jones is an insult to your readers’ intelligence. Let us not kid ourselves, Owen Jones is an Idiot. Giving him the credibility of your publication is an editorial failure.
Your readers deserve serious arguments, even provocative ones. This falls well below that standard.
Do better.
I thank God I am no longer a New Statesman subscriber. This is shameful stuff.

I don’t understand how so many clever people can be so stupid.
I signed this open letter in the @NewStatesman.

And she remains completely free to write, to publish, and to sell her books. Just not to give the proceeds to a proscribed terrorist organisation. This is not hard to understand.

And yet a dodgy technique only takes you so far.

Same madness has infected @lancscricket where they’ve forcibly retired a bowler that took 50 championship wickets at 17 *this year*.
Just bizarre from Marcus North and @ECB_cricket. Leach averages 27 in f/c cricket in 1st division; Rehan averages 38 and Bashir averages 49. But let's not pick Leach. Weird.

Another way to think about Trump announcement today: If he increased US diesel imports from Canada by 4%, he would gain as much fuel as from this Russia deal. But the Canadians are global super-villains, so who wants to buy from them when you could enrich Putin instead?
George Cazenove retweeted
It is sickening that the USA is now lifting sanctions on Russian fuel, and transparently ridiculous to blame Ukraine for the spike in prices that obviously began with the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. Putin is murdering innocent Ukrainian civilians every day. The Ukrainians are fighting for their lives. And yet the White House is apparently determined to force American drivers to bankroll Putin’s slaughter. It won’t work and I doubt it will make much difference to the price of fuel.
If we want Russian oil and gas back on the world market then let’s end this war - with a free, sovereign and independent Ukraine.
